What the Texas State Aquarium is up to after Harvey – Off the Kuff

What the Texas State Aquarium is up to after Harvey – Off the Kuff | Citizens' Environmental Coalition (Houston) | Scoop.it
During Harvey, aquarium officials took in other birds and marine animals from the University of Texas-Austin Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas and the Aquarium at Rockport Harbor — both areas that were devastated by the storm. They rescued pets such as Macaws, goats and chickens abandoned by owners who were fleeing Harvey’s torrent of wind and rain. And after the storm passed, they took in and cared for injured Brown Pelicans, turtles and other marine life. Most returned to the wild. Others, like Storm, never will. This kind of rehabilitation work is nothing new for the aquarium; it has been part of its mission, along with conservation, since it opening almost 30 years ago. It’s become such an important part of their work, officials said, they plan to open a new rehabilitation facility on their campus as early as 2021. Officials expect it will cost up to $20 million. A new state-of-the-art building is important, aquarium president and CEO Tom Schmid said, because it’s only a matter of time before the Gulf of Mexico has another environmental disaster like Deepwater Horizon. When that oil rig exploded in April 2010, nearly 3.2 million barrels of oil spilled into the Gulf, harming animals, marine life and coral. “We need to make sure we are ready for any environmental issue out there,” he said.

After divesting renewables, NRG is getting back in the business

After divesting renewables, NRG is getting back in the business | Citizens' Environmental Coalition (Houston) | Scoop.it
NRG Energy got out of the renewables business earlier this year when it sold its wind and solar operations for $1.8 billion to satisfy shareholders seeking better returns. But now NRG, the biggest electricity seller in Houston, is getting back into the solar power business with a new approach.
The company has teamed up with an independent solar power provider to develop 25 megawatts of solar projects that NRG hopes will attract environmentally-sensitive commercial and industrial customers.
NRG is betting that solar installations provided by Cypress Creek Renewables of Santa Monica, Calif., will serve as the foundation for NRG to sell renewable energy plans to large businesses.

Wildlife is wild, so admire from afar

Wildlife is wild, so admire from afar | Citizens' Environmental Coalition (Houston) | Scoop.it
Texas' wild and feral places can be wonderlands, but they aren't Disneyland.
It pays to remember that and act accordingly, especially this time of year as summer settles in and folks spend more time outdoors, increasing opportunities to encounter wildlife.
Wildlife is just that - wild. That's what makes them so fascinating and enjoyable to encounter. They are not domesticated livestock or pets. And wild creatures are nothing like the anthropomorphic caricatures that may make for amusing entertainment but do a damaging disservice to both the animals and the humans whose opinions and interactions with wild creatures are shaped and guided by such Pollyannaism.
