Equipment for Syrian information activists | Free Press Unlimited | People deserve to know | CitizenJournalism | Scoop.it

This Dutch outfit helps citizen journalists out in Syria with equipment such as SIM cards and training.  Their website notes:

"it is mainly young people in Syria who spontaneously film events with their mobile phones and distribute these images via social media. This can result in biased or one-sided reporting. ‘Those reports we do receive only show one side of the story. I know about a great many good initiatives and peaceful actions, but they are not given any exposure,’ said a young Syrian journalist who has fled the country."

Rabih Mroué The Pixelated Revolution – ART and POLITICS NOW

Rabih Mroué The Pixelated Revolution – ART and POLITICS NOW | CitizenJournalism | Scoop.it

This interesting essay ponders a Beirut-based artist's decision to incorporate citizen journalism from the Syrian revolution into his art. In a time of intense political crisis, is this the role the artist should play?

Interestingly, the essay traces the use of current and immediate war documentation - video and photographic images - into art to the 2006 war in Lebanon with Israel.  Just a few weeks ago, an artist positioned a model in the midst of a political protest about the conflict taking place in downtown Beirut.

Such contrasts are provocative and meant to catch us off guard.  What should our personal responses be?

American Citizen Journalists Take Road Trip to Syria

American Citizen Journalists Take Road Trip to Syria | CitizenJournalism | Scoop.it

I'm not sure why these two citizen journalists from the US headed to Syria.  The story does not indicate that they speak Arabic or Turkish (they entered via Turkey) or have any sort of background that would give insights into the story.  Maybe I don't have the whole story but this seems kind of like citizen journalism as tourism to me

this is neat to see how far the First Amendment can really go! To think that we always thought it was just about speech and religion and press!
Michael Sigrist's comment, April 21, 2014 11:40 PM
I feel like this Is good to see because it is a part of the law that people always were scared of, but now know that it is fine to do.

Journalism project crowdsources memorial to victims of Syrian conflict | IJNet | CitizenJournalism | Scoop.it

"Faces of the Fallen aims to humanize the victims of the uprising in Syria.

"The project is a crowdsourcing platform that collects images and videos from citizen journalists in Syria and abroad and displays them on a virtual wall. . . In addition to civilian casualties, the site hopes to show photos of soldiers, whether they are from the Syrian Armed Forces or “resistance forces” like the Free Syria Army."

The project was created by VOA, the American government broadcasting outlet aimed at foreign countries, and raises interesting questions about the US' intensions in injecting itself into the citizen journalism stream created inside and outside of Syria.
