Wednesday, 17 October, 2012. On 13 October, 2005, the largest terrorist attack in the history of Kabardino-Balkaria took place in the capital of Nalchik. The attack took the lives of 35 law enforcement and military officers, 14 civilians and 92 attackers. Prosecution of the surviving attackers continues to this day; 57 individuals are in trial with the majority pleading not guilty.

These include 76 Uzbeks, 2 Vietnamese and 5 Syrian citizens. It is unclear whether the Syrian citizens are Circassian.

Organized by the Department of Consumer Marketing Services and the Ministry of Economic Development, the event was designed to allow local producers market their offerings. The goals of the event were to promote multicultural awareness and stimulate socio-economic growth in the region.

Monday, 15 October, 2012. The people of Kabardino-Balkaria turned out on Saturday, 13 October to commemorate those who died in the tragic terrorist attack that took place on that same day in 2005. Turn out included individuals from all walks of life, including students, law enforcement officials, government representatives and the general public. The rally marked the seventh anniversary of the attacks and took place near a monument to law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

The Federal Security Service, Russia’s main domestic intelligence agency, announced on Saturday that it had shut down 20 nongovernmental organizations in southern Russia after discovering links to foreign spy agencies. But aid groups in the region said no such organizations had been closed, raising suspicions that the announcement was in fact a threat.
