Morocco to suspend soft wheat customs duty on Nov. 1

Morocco to suspend soft wheat customs duty on Nov. 1 | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it
Morocco will cancel customs duty on soft wheat on November 1 to ensure regular supply, the agriculture ministry said on Tuesday. To protect the local harvest, Morocco imposed a 135 percent customs duty which will last until October 31.

The move followed an exceptional cereals output this year of 10.3 million tonnes, including of 4.91 million tonnes of soft wheat, 2.42 million tonnes of hard wheat and 2.92 of durum. The duty cancellation would ensure regular supply "in light of the slow pace of the collection of national output", the agriculture and fisheries ministry said in a statement. It gave no details. The decision, which will enter into force after the approval of the government council, will enable importers to better plan reserves, it said.

Understanding vegetation changes on the tundra could improve predictions on the impacts of climate change.
Plants in tundra ecosystems are getting taller, according to a study conducted by a large consortium of over one hundred scientists, including a researcher affiliated with Qatar University. Tundra ecosystems, present in northern arctic and alpine regions, lack trees but have an abundance of shrubs, grasses and mosses.

Mediterranean diet could prevent depression, study finds | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it

People who followed a strict Mediterranean diet had a 33% lower risk of being diagnosed with depression compared to people who were least likely to follow these eating habits.
"There is compelling evidence to show that there is a relationship between the quality of your diet and your mental health," said Camille Lassale, research associate at University College London's department of epidemiology and public health in the UK. "This relationship goes beyond the effect of diet on your body size or other aspects of health that can in turn affect your mood."

Maroc : La filière laitière prépare sa certification - Le Matin | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it

Austin Just Banned Restaurants From Throwing Food Away

Austin Just Banned Restaurants From Throwing Food Away | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it

Restaurants in Austin can't throw away food anymore. A new law starting this month requires restaurants to compost food scraps or give them away, as part of the city's Universal Recycling Ordinance (URO) that aims to make the southern city more sustainable.
As part of Texas’ Zero Waste by 2040 pledge, all food enterprises (which includes restaurants, shops, and farm markets that serve made-to-order food, as well as places that prepare and process food) will need to use alternatives from sending organic materials to landfills. The measure also requires that employees receive training about handling the waste.
