The Political Economy of Food Security in North Africa | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it

The recent global food price shock, combined with the political upheaval in North Africa, provides an opportune moment for the North African countries, along with the international community, to take stock of the food security status of the region and to reappraise food security strategies in countries like Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania.

Reduced food waste means increased income for farmers in Rwanda

In the richer countries of the world, food gets wasted on the plate. In the poorer countries, the problem is a different one. Here, food is wasted in production, harvesting, processing and storage.
At the same time, 815 million people are suffering from hunger. Making production more effective, decreasing post-harvest loss and linking farmers to the markets are all crucial elements in reducing food waste. This is why WFP has launched the Farm to Market Alliance (FtMA).

Researchers explore psychological effects of climate change

Researchers explore psychological effects of climate change | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it
While some people have little anxiety about the Earth's changing climate, others are experiencing high levels of stress, and even depression, based on their perception of the threat of global climate change, researchers found. Psychological responses to climate change seem to vary based on what type of concern people show for the environment, with those highly concerned about the planet's animals and plants experiencing the most stress.

The controversial kitchen

The controversial kitchen | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it
Conflict, it seems, is an inevitable guest to both the kitchen and dining table. What is exceptional about food, and mezze in particular, is its powerful ability to bring people together despite circumstances – even giving a sense of unity across seeming divides. Mezze holds together a region stretching from the far western coast of North Africa to the Arabian Sea, and from the Balkans down to Yemen. It does not silence disagreements or close controversial conversations – in fact, it often keeps them alive. But in the end, isn’t that what food is for?

Natural Olive Oil Preservative as Effective as Synthetic Ones

Natural Olive Oil Preservative as Effective as Synthetic Ones | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it

A new study has found that adding tomato peel extracts to refined olive oil increases the product’s shelf life.
Researchers from the University of Sfax and Ayachi Group Industry in Tunisia compared the stabilizing effects of adding oleoresin and synthetic antioxidants to the oils.
When olive oil is refined some of its natural antioxidants are partially eliminated and therefore must be supplemented in order to prevent the oil from spoiling. Olive oil must be refined when the quality is too low to be safely consumed. According to the International Olive Council, more than 50 percent of olive oil produced in the Mediterranean region is refined.
