The Seed Queen of Palestine | Palestine | Al Jazeera | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it

Can one woman's mission to revive ancient heirloom seeds inspire a celebration of traditional Palestinian food?

In the fields and terraces of the occupied West Bank, a Palestinian woman is leading a quiet revolution.

Vivien Sansour is distributing rare, ancient heirloom seeds to Palestinian farmers.

Inspired by memories of her grandmother and the delicious food of her childhood, Vivien wants to reintroduce long forgotten Palestinian produce to the tables of people across the West Bank and beyond. And she believes these organic, climate change-resistant seeds are the key to that.

What Food Waste Apps Help Reduce Food Waste?

What Food Waste Apps Help Reduce Food Waste? | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it

Mobile application software known as “apps” have soared in popularity. With millions of tonnes of food thrown each year, it was likely that the creation of waste-reducing apps would try and prevent these issues. What these apps do for smartphone users is provide a outlet for them to give surplus food away, purchase surplus food at a reduced amount and aid profits for restaurants. Apps are used on smartphones, tablets and smart watches. In a technological world, many people have smartphones with them everyday during the day. We know a phone makes phone calls and sends text messages, but with technological advances it also pays for items and communicates with people through social media outlets such as Twitter and Instagram.

Turkey in need to reform its agricultural policy ?

Turkey in need to reform its agricultural policy ? | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it

By Elif Zeren (Ahval), 09/11/2018

Turkey’s agricultural problems stem from wrong government policies and can be solved by incentivising small farms, alternative and more environmentally friendly production technologies, said sociologist Dr Sezai Ozan Zeybek, a research fellow at the Forum Transregionale Studien in Germany

Agriculture in Turkey has been hit by a fall in the lira by about a third this year, raising the price of fuel and imports and in turn leading to higher prices for consumers. Food items make up about a quarter of the basket used to calculate inflation, currently at an annual rate of 25 percent.

EU agri-food exports remain stable unless wheat | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it

By the DG AGRI of the European Commission, 26/10/2018

The year on year performance of EU agri-food exports remains remarkably stable with the September 2017 - August 2018 period representing a 0.1% change on the previous 12 months. This was due to a slight decline during August 2018 with exports dropping to €11.3 billion (a decrease of 2%), with imports also falling slightly to €9.1 billion (a drop of 0.6%). These are the main findings from the latest monthly trade report (476.1 KB - PDF) published by the European Commission.

Exports of cereals (other than wheat and rice) have experienced a significant rise (of €51 million) with pasta and bread (a rise of €32 million) also performing strongly. However, wheat has  experienced a significant decrease, down €62 million and €47 million respectively.
