Since Google ditched Google Reader, RSS has receded from many people's awareness. Yet RSS and versatile RSS readers such as NetVibes continue to exist, and if you want to learn information skills to support attention skills, you can do no better than Dawn Foster, who can tell you simply and step-by-step how to arrange for the information you want to come to you, and to filter out the information you don't want.

Nice survey of the research on multitasking. We're just getting started...

"Clifford Nass, notes that scholarship has remained firm in the overall assessment: “The research is almost unanimous, which is very rare in social science, and it says that people who chronically multitask show an enormous range of deficits. They’re basically terrible at all sorts of cognitive tasks, including multitasking.” - See more at: http://journalistsresource.org/studies/society/social-media/multitasking-social-media-distraction-what-does-research-say#sthash.I21dv2wV.dpuf";

Attention is important. This entry gives an overview of some research that has been done on multitasking.

Katie Muirhead's curator insight, August 20, 2014 11:53 AM

As our lives are becoming increasingly technical, it is not surprising that research into media multitasking is becoming more widespread. This article is particularly authoritative as it has curated relevant university studies. It notes  that "people who chronically multitask show an enormous range of deficits. They're basically terrible at all sorts of cognitive tasks, including multitasking." This comment alone is enough to inspire me to both research this subject matter more, ans strive towards mindfulness myself!!

How smart tech is improving our human relationships

How smart tech is improving our human relationships | Challenges in an Globalized World | Scoop.it
The new generation of smart technology may actually be serving to enhance our human relationships and not diminish them, as many fear. Smart is enabling new ways for us to relate to each other. Relationships are at the heart of the notion of smart society, and digital technologies appear to be changing the ways we relate to each other. Whether it is about the way we connect with each other, the spatial and temporal dimensions of our communication, the breadth and depth of our connections, or the meanings that are conveyed and experience shared, the use of new connected technologies and networks changes the dynamics of our relationships through the following five levers: Directness, We can see and interact with each other more directly in real time as a result of digital technologies that enable real-time visuals Continuity, Digital technologies also allow for continuous and more regular interactions, particularly when it is neither possible nor desirable to meet in person, or when we are geographically dispersed Parity, Digital technologies are a leveller – they enable all sections of society to engage with each other on equal footing. Commonality, We are increasingly able to focus our relationships on striving towards common goals when there is shared purpose in our relationships Multiplexity, Increased directness and continuity in relationships often lead to higher levels of multiplexity, that is having deeper knowledge of others and wider understanding of situational contexts in relationships

Design Principles for Online Communities: Kollock

The key challenges the Internet community will face in the future are not simply technological, but also sociological: the challenges of social interaction and social organization. This is not to diminish the difficulties of creating new technologies, but rather to emphasize that even these tasks will pale besides the problems of facilitating and encouraging successful online interaction and online communities.

The problems of social interaction and order are often ignored in the software and online industry. While many people have begun to talk about "social computing," as it is used now it is a thin term that applies more to user interface design than to actual social interaction between two or more people. Common responses to the challenge of designing systems that support robust social interaction include pretending this issue is not important, or that there is nothing one can do about it, or that it is simply a user interface issue.

Urban Skyfarm concept would provide inner city farming space | GizMag.com

Urban Skyfarm concept would provide inner city farming space | GizMag.com | Challenges in an Globalized World | Scoop.it
Two problems caused by increasing overpopulation in cities are how to use space productively and how to feed everyone. A new concept design suggests a means of addressing both these issues. Aprilli Design Studio's Urban Skyfarm is a tree-like skyscraper that provides space for crop farming.Aprilli designed the Skyfarm with Seoul, South Korea, in mind, but it could be deployed in any major city. In addition to providing space for growing food, it would help to clean the city's air, generate renewable electricity and provide a place for people to relax.The primary structure has a large, root area at its base to provide stability and spread the weight of the Skyfarm out across the ground. A trunk section rises up from the root and spreads out into eight vertical branches that are connected together by trusses to provide structural reinforcement..Click headline to read more, view pix gallery and watch video clip--
