I chose this resource because similar to student achievement gaps, there are definitely gaps in educational technology. In my college program, we didn't learn much about how to use technology in our schools.. I hope that this article will help us learn and understand that we still have so much work to do in preparing our new teachers and administrators with ways that they can use technology to help benefit them in their schools and classrooms.

This shows how social media affects the society such as in school classrooms and how it is important to have some life in social media. I feel that social media has become a big part in this world that social media can bring quite a number of positive impacts and how it can impact a community, or rather a class. I think social media's impact on societies and people will increase both positively and negatively and there is no sign of decrease in usage social media.

Why haven't education reform efforts amounted to much? Because they start with the wrong problem, says John Abbott, director of the 21st Century Learning

"Any kid can read a textbook — they don't need a teacher standing over them telling them to do so. They need teachers to inspire them to think about things in a much bigger way than they've done before."

On a practical level, the most powerful lever for change, Abbott says, is people coming together to “rethink the role of community in the learning process,” agreeing how to divide up responsibilities among professional teachers and other community members, and then launching small pilot projects that are true to their new vision. These efforts will build on each other, he says, and large-scale change will follow.

Innovation is everyone's great desire. We worship innovation. Entrepreneurs embrace it. Careers are made on it. Companies compete over it. The challenge is we may not all be talking about the same thing.

The innovator's mindset embraces these ten strategies I have found in my research:
1. Bring value and meaning that is clearly unique.
2. Create a culture of inventing that others can build on.
3. Move with velocity to embrace the new.
4. Have the courage to create.
5. Disrupt yourself before others do.
6. If you don't have passion about an idea, don't do it.
7. Change something to make it better, bring the value.
8. Monetizing innovation is called success.
9. People do the innovating.
10. Decide what mountain top you want to own, then go for it.

rodrick rajive lal's curator insight, December 30, 2014 9:28 PM

I found this article very much in sync with the changes taking place in the field of education today. Pedagogy is undergoing a huge change today. A few days back, when Dr. Dennis Littky came to my school to address a gathering of educationists, he talked about the 'Big Picture' school of education. What is not interesting to students will simply not stick! The article by Terry Heick highlights the need for interest when he states that Interest is one of the six design principles of Connected Learning, in fact he puts interest as the first in the list. The second on the list of Principles of Connected Learning is that it should be Production Centered. Today we are moving away from rote learning and instead have started adopting a more experiential form where the student is able to experiment and come up with results on his own. Today, experiential schools encourage student led learning rather than teacher led learning. Take for example, a lesson involving the reading and appreciation of a poem in an English class. The ideal way would be to give one stanza to each group or crew, and then let them come up with their own analysis. The teacher is always there to guide them when they come up with extreme interpretations. And when they hit the nail, then they can take ownership and pride in what they have discovered, rather than what the teacher told them, or what they read from Spark Notes! The rest of the principles fall in place the moment you start a pedagogy that is student centered and and you make them sit in crews or groups rather than in rows!
