Harriette Knight's insight:
At a time that I feel that American students could be better served by learning to chunk in a variety of areas in arithmetic and higher mathematics, this article advocates reverting back to traditional methods. Somehow the article suggests that traditional methods of multiplying and dividing whole numbers are more efficient. The article also advocates penalizing students on standardized tests that use chunking or gridding with a loss of some points even when they get the right answer. Are we returning to the days of claiming the most efficient methods as those that arrive at the correct answer the quickest?

Repeated addition of small and large chunks of numbers often makes multiplication easier. Memorization of the multiplication facts is a stumbling block for many in 2-digit multiplication. Chunking can help students to avoid this stumbling block while they build their recall of the facts.

Some teachers encourage students to subtract by making jumps on the number line and adding the length of the jumps to find the difference. A better problem for this process would be 32-18. Students might jump from 18 to 20 and continue to make jumps. Or they might jump from 18 to 28 and continue to 32. Ss support their thinking by adding jumps/chunks. For many, this is easier to understand than borrowing ten.

The instructor makes a small error in the video when she confuses her longs and units with the chunking method. However, I like her use of pictures to illustrate addition in base 5. It emphasizes the fact that a long does not always represent a 10. It is the user who determines the value of the manipulative. The manipulative can be manipulated to take on any value that the user chooses.

By the way, what is the Bus Stop Method? Are we confusing mathematics by coming up with so many different cute names. Have you heard of the turtle method? what about the butterfly method? Grid method? Box method?
