The Missing Ingredient In Digital Health? Operational Innovation

The Missing Ingredient In Digital Health? Operational Innovation | Consumer Digital Health | Scoop.it

Every disruptive promise has its pitfalls, and attempts to “disrupt” the healthcare system without taking into account the reasons for its complicated structure are ultimately fool’s errands. In order for new technologies to fit into the innate constraints of today’s reality, companies need to be just as creative and innovative on the “how” of operations as they are naturally with the “what” of technology.

A feather in one’s app: why the UK could lead the way for medical app patents | Consumer Digital Health | Scoop.it

Apple’s recent announcement that it will be opening its health records application programming interface (API) will be big news for healthcare app developers in the US. FDA Allows Marketing Of 1st Direct-to-consumer App For Female Contraceptive Use

FDA Allows Marketing Of 1st Direct-to-consumer App For Female Contraceptive Use | Consumer Digital Health | Scoop.it
Natural Cycles requires women to take their temperature daily using a basal body thermometer, in the morning immediately upon waking, and to enter the reading into the app, which also tracks a user’s menstrual cycle. Basal body thermometers are more sensitive than regular thermometers and detect a minor rise in temperature, only about half of one degree Fahrenheit, around the time of ovulation. Women using the app for contraception should abstain from sex or use protection (such as a condom) when they see “use protection” displayed on the app, which means they’re more likely to be fertile during those days.

The Promise of Cost-Reducing Innovation in Medical Health: Coming soon?

The Promise of Cost-Reducing Innovation in Medical Health: Coming soon? | Consumer Digital Health | Scoop.it

Only a few years back, primary care physician office assistants would search through cabinets of paper folders to access records and health histories for each patient visit. The concept that Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) would drastically collapse office file inventories, that paper prescriptions would become obsolete, and a PC would be an indispensable exam room tool — seemed to be a distant reality.

Beeyond's insight:

Currently, the innovative cost-reducing advantages of EMRs possibly yield a minuscule fraction of health expenses, less than 0.01%. At the present, a meaningful correlation between EMR uptake and healthcare cost reduction has not been observed. We have not seen reductions in exam fees since the time of manila files. There are large opportunities for improvement. We need to seek out the root causes of this failure to extract value from technology investments like this one.

Want my digital health data? Convince me. | Consumer Digital Health | Scoop.it
Realistically, it may take a long time to get to the point where the combination of the digital health wearable sensors and apps I’m using will be able to detect things like reduced immune functioning. Take genomics as an example. We have decoded the human genome, but we are not close to having every gene-to-gene-environment interaction mapped out, because research and development take time. This should be communicated to patients so they do not feel duped.
