No, Consumer Digital Health Apps Are Not “Dangerous” | Consumer Digital Health | Scoop.it

According to the FDA Website:

The widespread adoption and use of mobile technologies is opening new and innovative ways to improve health and health care delivery. Mobile applications (apps) can help people manage their own health and wellness, promote healthy living, and gain access to useful information when and where they need it.
For many mobile apps that meet the regulatory definition of a “device” but pose minimal risk to patients and consumers, the FDA will exercise enforcement discretions and will not expect manufacturers to submit premarket review applications or to register and list their apps with the FDA.

These data showed that patients can identify the benefits of a medication reminder and recognize that self-monitoring their blood pressure could be empowering in terms of their understanding of the condition and interactions with their general practitioners. Why Apps for Managing Chronic Disease Haven’t Been Widely Used, and How to Fix It

Why Apps for Managing Chronic Disease Haven’t Been Widely Used, and How to Fix It | Consumer Digital Health | Scoop.it
While chronic disease management (CDM) apps have had some initial success, they have not yet lived up to their potential. This shortcoming is not due to the technologies, which are quite impressive; the problem is the incentives and institutions of the delivery system into which the technologies are being introduced. To succeed under these circumstances, developers of CDM apps must first consider who the primary (that is, paying) customers will be for their technologies.
Beeyond's insight:

One challenge facing digital health apps is that they are difficult to sell directly to patients, making this group an unlikely source of paying customers. Given that individuals are not used to paying for chronic disease treatment beyond standard co-pays for physician visits and prescription drugs, the costs of acquiring individual patients as customers are likely to be quite high.
