U.S. and Japan Agree on Returning Okinawa Land

U.S. and Japan Agree on Returning Okinawa Land | Chris' Regional Geography | Scoop.it
The agreement on a new timetable for handing over a Marine airfield and other military bases could help solve an issue that has strained America’s ties with its largest Asian ally.
chris tobin's insight:

US/Japan plans to relocate a Okinawa Marine airfield.

Other bases near it totalling 2,500 acres will be eliminated or moved to other parts of the island less populated.

This demonstrates that the US will maintain security presence in the area in lieu of growing challenges from China over disputed islands near Okinawa and China's growing global presence.

Interestingly, this article's last sentence states "The original agreement to move the base was reached in 1996 after the gang rape of an Okinawan schoolgirl by American servicemen."

Dr. Karen Dietz's curator insight, April 2, 2013 9:34 AM

What a great article! It is really focused on 6 steps that create the conditions for your ideas to spread.

And guess what -- storytelling and/or story triggers play a key role.

This post, written by Marina Krakovsky, talks about the new book by Jonah Berger called Contagious: Why Things Catch On.

Berger points out that Malcolm Gladwell in his book the Tipping Point is only half right; and that Chip Heath, author of Made To Stick really is only focusing on memorability. Both authors make incredibly valuable points and share valid insights.

But Berger focuses on what makes messages get passed along to others. His 6 elements are STEPPS: Social currency, Triggers, Emotion, Public, Practical value, and Stories.

I love the point he makes about stories and emotions. Just because your story contains emotions does not mean it will get passed on.  "We'll remember the story because it's sad," Berger explains, "but we’re not going to share it."

Will reading Berger's book and applying his STEPPS make you rich and famous? Maybe not. As he says, "But will applying them make it more likely that 10 people will hear about it rather than 9, or that your sales will increase by 20 or 40%? Certainly.”

There's a lot more to this article, so go read it.

Thank you Marina for writing such a great review. And I look forward to reading Berger's book.

The Golan Heights

The Golan Heights | Chris' Regional Geography | Scoop.it

In early November 2012, three Syrian tanks entered the demilitarized zone (DMZ) of the Golan Heights. The move by Syria is the first violation of the zone in 40 years and concerns countries of the region. Since then some of the Syrian rebels have also been reported operating in Golan Heights.

Via Seth Dixon
chris tobin's insight:

The Golan Heights is a major source of the Jordan River.  Its mountains border along Lebanon and Syria and provide rain and snowmelt to feed the river to provide a vital water source (strategic area and vital water source).  Israel took it in 1967 - and the DMZ was entered by war torn Syria in November 2012 .

The DMZ was entered by Syria and Israel reported this to the UN ....so, as civil war in Syria threatens its neighbors , there is a fear of retaliation that may occur in the Gaza Strip as well.

Heres some info on how poeple have been living in regards to a troubled area of the world.

Elizabeth Bitgood's curator insight, March 19, 2014 9:08 AM

This article stresses the importance of geography when discussing political situation with neighboring countries.  The fact that the heights are such a strategic advantage to whoever owns them explains why they are so contested.  As long as these two countries are not friendly nations this disagreement over the strategic point will continue.

Martin Kemp's curator insight, December 17, 2015 2:26 PM

i never even heard of the Golan Heights before this and i would have never known the significance of this DMZ until now. this just sheds more light on what is happening in syria today.
