I think this hook for reading is one that is going to be popular later. There are many students playing these games and maybe this can help introduce them to the books.

This article mentions John Paul Gee and his work on literacy and video games. It's interesting stuff if you get the chance to look at it. He has some good advice about how you can incorporate the way video games work into your teaching without using the actual games. Also, there is a TED Talk by game designer David Perry called "Are Games Better than Life?" that provides some very interesting food for thought about games. While the talk is from 2008 and many of the statistics have changed, the basic ideas are the same. You can see the talk here: http://www.ted.com/talks/david_perry_on_videogames.html
