Specialist Camp on Eye Problems conducted for Senior Citizens

On 15th April 2014, Child Survival India organized an Eye camp for elderly people at Swarna Jayanti Vihar J J colony in North Delhi under its project “ Community health care for Senior Citizens” supported by Directorate of Health services (DHS). The team of eye specialists from Max India Foundation provided 52 consultations and a general physician provided 46 consultations to elderly for other common ailments like Hypertension, diabetes, respiratory infections etc. Free Medicines were given to all the patients. Spectacles were advised to about 10 patients and 13 patients with CATARACT have been detected.

Child Survival India, in its endeavor to help youth attain a secured livelihood is implementing a training and placement project for underprivileged youth called MAST (Market Aligned Skills Training) funded by the American India Foundation. Under the MAST Project we have now introduced two new courses in collaboration with Apparel Training and Design Center (Ministry of Textiles, Government of India) at Savda Ghevra and Narela relocated colony in the North West Delhi.

Through a UNICEF supported program on Child Rights Protection in metal ware industry of Moradabad, CSI reached out to around 7000 families across 15 mohallas (low income settlements) this year. Though Moradabad produces 80% of the India’s total metal ware exports, nearly half its population lives below the poverty line, the literacy rates are low and the infant mortality rates are high.

The month of July brings with it precipitation and generous humidity and the winds travelling from the Arabian Sea bring respite to Delhi from the scorching heat of June and mark the onset of monsoon. On Friday the 5th the sun rose very early and on the outskirts of Delhi in a quiet village called Khera Khurd the birds had started their day by leaving their nests chirping and setting out to the fields. The farmers were starting to till and prepare their lands for the next crop and the peacocks while staring at the sky were incessantly calling from their nests on lush green acacia trees as if they were urging the clouds to open up and grant them some showers.

This project will provide enjoyable and meaningful learning experience to 160 out of school slum children in Delhi .These children are forced to miss regular school as they work as rag pickers, street vendors or help at roadside eateries to meet their family’s economic needs .Many of them stay at home to take care of their younger siblings and do household chores so that their parents can work to support the family.

The initiative works to prevent transmission of HIV infections amongst the identified MSM through behaviour change communication and other preventive interventions. It also facilitates linkages with HIV testing and care & support services for the MSM tested positive.

We have mainly been working on Health, Education and Gender issues. We have experience of conducting vocational training program but employability skills training was a relatively new field for us, that we took up almost 2 yrs. Ago, with the support of American india Foundation.

CSI brings to light a case of sexual abuse of a 7 yr old HIV positive boy in a government run home | Child survival India | Scoop.it

mother died of AIDS, the stepfather is lodged in Tihar Jail for raping his daughter and the seven-year-old HIV positive boy is caught in a fresh tragedy marked by  sexual abuse. Housed at Delhi government's Ashiana Home for Boys in Alipur, he has alleged sexual abuse by older boys. While the Child Welfare Committee decided to keep him out of the home and place him in the custody of NGO Child Survival India, which reported the matter on February 4, the Committee is yet to take action against the staff and officials running the institution. The CWC says an inquiry is on in the case. But no case has been registered with the police so far even as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act enacted last year makes it mandatory that complaints of sexual abuse must be reported to the police immediately.

Child Survival India established three “ Knowledge & fun centers” in the year 2008, initially with the support of Target Sourcing Services ,for poor slum children who have never been to school or who are school drop outs.The grant support was only for three years but CSI is continuing with the program and presently has 4 centers at Tikri, Samaypur & Narela to mobilise and educate out of school children from relocated slum clusters of Tikri, Samaypur and Narela in Delhi.

Last week the excitement levels of the children of our four Masti Ki Paathshaala centres were a little higher than the usual. The occasion being the celebration of International Literacy Day, the out of school, drop out and working slum children of Samaypur Badli, Tikri and Narela to whom we offer non-formal and remedial education had a much more engaging and entertaining day on the 7th with Shiv Lakhan Patel, a corporate senior executive in an IT firm and six female students (Ojaswi Singh, Shruti Sharma, Geetika Johar, Nikita Talwar, Khullak Tungran Dangsuwa and Divya Solanki) of Lady Irwin College – University of Delhi.
