-civil war weakened both sides and a Spanish conquest took over Cartagena in 1815 and the rest of New Granada in 1816
-over in Europe, Napoleon was forcing Carlos IV to give power to Fernando VII who would be forced to pass power to Joseph Bonaparte, Napoleon's brother
