prejudice, discrimination, stereotyping and sexual harassment * self-understanding and self-acceptance * caring about the school, using appropriate language, maintaining personal appearance, and volunteering ..."

Could this program be what's needed to curb discrimination or is the situation hopeless?  With the prevalence of stereotyping, sexual harassment and other discrimination, maybe there needs to be a sort of discrimination class given in all levels of schooling.  This could be a way to combat narrowmindedness, unless the information the child gets in school is undone by the parents when at home.

Using Humor to Learn

Iranian-American comedian Maz Jobrani takes to the TEDxSummit stage in Doha, Qatar to take on serious issues in the Middle East -- like how many kisses to give when saying “Hi,” and what not to say on an American airplane.

Lena Minassian's curator insight, March 22, 2015 3:56 PM

This video was great to watch. I watched this in class and had to write about it. Humor is a great way to shed light on certain topics that can be really heavy. This comedian is middle eastern himself which makes it better for him to talk about these topics. Many individuals don't know the lighter side to middle eastern people just because all they see is negative aspects of the culture. I enjoyed that he could talk about serious topics and have a room full of people not only laughing at it but being educated at the same time. People don't feel like they're being strictly taught because they're watching a comedian give a show. Being middle eastern myself, i found this video great because raising awareness and allowing more insight about the middle east is a powerful thing when it has always has a negative context.

Jacob Conklin's curator insight, May 6, 2015 4:42 PM

"I never knew these people laughed." This is perhaps one of the most sad things that could be said. It dehumanizes the middle east in a very cruel way. It implies that people in the middle east do not have any sense of humor and are always serious about everything. Like the United States, there are times to be serious, but there are also times to laugh. The media and even the film industry in the US portrays the middle east as Sodom and Gomorra and the people from the area as misogynistic religious fanatics. It is truly sad that we live in a world where prejudices trump openness and acceptance.

Martin Kemp's curator insight, December 17, 2015 2:17 PM

its interesting because this video make the middle east seem more european with the differences in culture. people tend to clump these countries together but they are very different and should be seen that way

What’s a character educator?

What’s a character educator? | Character Education | Scoop.it

One, that character matters no matter who you are or where you are. Two, that they might look at character education this way: If exercising builds strong muscles, then practicing the virtues of good behavior builds strong character. Three, one important way that our children learn character is from observing, imitating, and modeling what adults say and do.

This being the case, I remind them that they too are character educators.

Online Video Lectures and Course Materials — Open Yale Courses

Open Yale Courses provides free and open access to a selection of introductory courses taught by distinguished teachers and scholars at Yale University. The aim of the project is to expand access to educational materials for all who wish to learn.

Open Yale Courses reflects the values of a liberal arts education. Yale's philosophy of teaching and learning begins with the aim of training a broadly based, highly disciplined intellect without specifying in advance how that intellect will be used. This approach goes beyond the acquisition of facts and concepts to cultivate skills and habits of rigorous, independent thought: the ability to analyze, to ask the next question, and to begin the search for an answer.

We hope the lectures and other course materials on this site will be a resource for critical thinking, creative imagination, and intellectual exploration. All lectures were recorded in the Yale College classroom and are available in video, audio, and text transcript format. Registration is not required and no course credit is available.

Video and audio elements from Open Yale Courses are now also available at:

Teaching Respect and Responsibility — Even to Digital Natives | MindShift | Character Education | Scoop.it

While the basic tenets of digital citizenship attempt to protect kids from cyberbullying, misconduct, and harassment, Allen is also interested in teaching the positive behaviors that will make successful students and workers for the future: teaching students how to find and analyze reliable sources for research, how to verify whether information is biased and/or credible, and how to be a responsible user.

Empathy, not just academics, key to success: Borba

Empathy, not just academics, key to success: Borba | Character Education | Scoop.it

Other countries might have more obvious concerns such as poverty, malnutrition, civil war or a high infant mortality, but the United States has as big a problem as exists anywhere in the world when it comes to empathy.

“In no area are American kids farther behind than with empathy,” said Michele Borba, an internationally acclaimed parenting and character education expert who recently returned from Colombia and Nicaragua.

Research shows that aggression is up in American children, and it’s starting a lot earlier, Borba said.
