3 Essential Elements of Strategic Thinking | Creative GapMinding

After years of talking strategy with business partners I have come to the conclusion that most of us don’t know what strategic thinking really is. Most of what we call strategic thinking is really not that strategic.

Thinking comes in many forms:

Howard Gardner talks about five in his book Five Minds for the Future, and describes at least six kinds of intelligence in his other writingsEdward de Bono describes Six Thinking Hats, written specifically for thinking in a business contextI have compiled a list of about a dozen or so approaches to thinking.

How automation will impact the next generation of work

How automation will impact the next generation of work | GWTNext -GLOBAL WORKFORCE TRANSFORMATION - PAVING THE TRAIL TO THE FUTURE. | Scoop.it
While only about 5 percent of all jobs will be phased out entirely due to automation, most jobs will continue to change and workers will be redeployed. To remain viable, workers will need to beef up their skills in creativity, collaboration and communication.
Laura Goodrich's insight:

“Employers should be helping them to prepare now for the digital New World, according to Guardian’s report, “The Next Generation of Work.”

A more technology-enabled workplace is creating a widening gap between the skills employees possess and the skills employers require,”

Millennials are likely to embrace opportunities to acquire new skills, such as taking on a new role, cross-training, making a career change or returning to school.

One in five Baby Boomers would retire when faced with significant work/job changes.

"One in five U.S. companies expect an increase in their agile workforce in the coming five years as younger generations lean toward non-traditional employment arrangements, flexible schedules, part-time/contingent and non-permanent positions."

Automatic for the people: How HR brings robots and humans together

Automatic for the people: How HR brings robots and humans together | GWTNext -GLOBAL WORKFORCE TRANSFORMATION - PAVING THE TRAIL TO THE FUTURE. | Scoop.it
There have been numerous predictions about the impact of automation on certain jobs, but it need not all be bad news. Cath Everett looks at HR's role.
Laura Goodrich's insight:
“Machines are very good at deterministic jobs, which are repetitive and process-oriented, but where people will contribute is in areas such as creative and strategic thinking, intuition and problem-solving.
This joint way of working could boost productivity by up to 3.5 times compared with today – and possibly even more once we better understand the true potential of the human/machine partnership.
“If you can automate processes and make them more cost-effective to manage, it’ll lead to an increase in roles requiring creativity and human intervention such as relationship management. This will create an experience that’s more personalised and human than it often is today.”

Today’s customers crave a new type of experience.
Customers are so eager for a better purchasing experience, 86% of them are willing to pay more money to get it.
Human talent is also growing scarcer, as employees lack the requisite skills to manage the data that comes with running digitized, extended supply chains.
It's Entirely possible that people still don’t fully grasp the importance of transforming their existing business models and processes to succeed in today’s digital economy.

How Long Should Your Video Be?
There are four main takeaways they shared with us based on their research:
According to video experts, Wistia, the length of your video has a ton of influence on whether the audience will stick with it or not. They studied video length vs. engagement, thinking that the trend would look something like this…
  1. Videos up to 2 minutes get tons of engagement
  2. There is a significant drop off between 2 to 3 minutes.
  3. 6 - 12 minutes is sweet spot number two.
  4. Proceed with caution after 12 minutes.

Barriers to Business Agility and Insights on How to Break Them - GWTNext.com | GWTNext -GLOBAL WORKFORCE TRANSFORMATION - PAVING THE TRAIL TO THE FUTURE. | Scoop.it
To become agile, companies need to put people before processes, be they employees or customers. Change can be scary but not changing is scarier. By shedding the age-old concepts, they can achieve business agility.
Laura Goodrich's insight:

“The system is that there is no system. That doesn’t mean there are no processes. We have great processes and they make us more efficient. But that’s not what it is about. It’s ad hoc meetings, talking in hallways and calling each other at 10:30 at night to discuss a new idea or something that shoots holes in how everyone’s been thinking about a problem. This is how Apple works”, said Steve Jobs, the charismatic entrepreneur, marketer, inventor and leader.
