Pysanky Ukrainian Eggs have a long cultureal history. The egg is a symbolic representation for life. The tradition of placing designs on the egg comes from creating codes that are symbolic of things like feelings, mystery and elements of culture. The designs invlovlve a trinity of symbolism. The egg shape has symbolic menaing as does the design and the colors used.
This site contains Ukrainian historical and cultural information, lesson plans for creating Pysanky eggs, instructional handouts and rubrics for a middle or high school level art class.
