A Signing of Partnership between the Canadian Welding Bureau and Primary Structures Educational Foundation Inc. Training and Certification Center took place during the 10th Christmas Gathering of Canadians and Friends of Canada last December 1, 2011 at the Cebu Grand Convention Center.  

 

Signatories and witnesses include (seated from left) Mr. William Liu, President and CEO of Primary Structures Corporation, Canadian Ambassador to the Phils. Christopher Thornley, Mr. Craig Martin, VP for Operations of the Canadian Welding Bureau; (standing from left) Mr. Ping Redoble - PSEFI Executive Director, Ms. Paulette Liu - PSEFI Chief Operationg Officer, Mrs. Anna Lee and her husband Hon. Consul Robert Lee.

 

CWB is a leading Canadian organization in welding services, procedures and comprehensive training courses and products.  It seeks to train PSEFI welding students achieve a high level of competence through transfer of welding technology; and on work safety, including soft skills (eg. communications in the workplace) that are of immediate value to employers.  This way, PSEFI graduates can blend in easily to specific demands of offshore oil and gas projects, or the Canadian labor industry.

CEBU, Philippines - Realizing that Cebu has yet to offer the high-caliber medical services to maximize its potential in attracting medical tourists across the world, the province is positioning to promote itself as “Light Medical Tourism Destination,” in the Philippines.

 

Earlier, Canadian Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines president Julian Payne, urged stakeholders in the health and wellness sector in Cebu to do more in terms of providing packages, and attractive services.

 

Dental, cosmetics, and eye care are the most in-demand services by foreigners, especially in Canada, these should be more highlighted by the players here, said CanCham president Julian Payne.

Cebu City Mayor Michael L. Rama hopes to promote international community and mutual cooperation among the business sector in Canada with the launching of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Cebu City.

 

The Mayor said that he is happy to welcome the Canadian Chamber and to always keep in mind that service to humanity comes first. He hopes that there will be mutual benefit between the two countries bringing in more investments from Canada as well as trading exports.

 

According to Canadian Consulate Robert Lee, the Cebu Chapter of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce would soon be launched by the early part of 2011.

While Cebu is undoubtedly attractive as a tourism destination for both local and international travelers, it has to immediately address the lack of proper infrastructure to maximize its tourism potential.

 

This is a call for the government and the private sector prime movers in Cebu by the country’s known economist and BDO Market Strategist Jonas Ravelas, in an Economic Briefing organized by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce-Cebu last 26 October 2011 at the Cebu City Marriott Hotel.

The first annual plenary session was attended by 30 corporate, individual members, and CanCham officers, with special guest Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama. The two Cebu-based Governors Hon. Consul of Canada Robert Lee and Mr. Jack Gaisano of VICSAL Development Corporation graced the event.


The program started with the 2010 Annual Report delivered by CanCham President Julian Payne. He emphasized the importance of developing linkages with the key players in the new Philippine administration which is important in shaping policies and positions of CanCham that affect Canada-Philippines business interests. This was made evident with sequential meetings held, together with other members of Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce and key Philippine officials.

 

Mr. Payne also highlighted the value of increasing membership: to have more political clout and influence, more expertise, and more resources to develop programs.
Hon. Consul Robert Lee was recognized for his support in successfully building up the initial Cebu Chapter membership, and Exec. Director Sean Georget for his efforts in increasing that of Manila.

 

Mr. Georget gave the 2010 Financial Report with reference to the start-up costs of the Cebu Chapter and the overall financial outcomes of the Chamber.  This was followed by Q&A, group discussion, and networking.

Fifteen of them have not only managed to spell out success in all its brightness and highlights – they have gracefully showed how excellence in every endeavor could be made achievable if enthusiasm reigns.

 

"Your generous support helped me to fulfill a lifelong dream of going to college," says fellow scholar Elgie Panimdim who was conferred upon a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Technology major in Computer Technology --- Magna Cum Laude --- at the Cebu Technological University-Main Campus.

A new initiative, called “Partnership for Better Infrastructure” or PBI will be launched in Cebu this Friday, May 13, 2011 at Marco Polo Plaza Hotel. The PBI aims to broaden participation in the allocation and implementation of infrastructure investments to support economic development and poverty reduction.

 

Through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed during the launching last Friday, the REID Foundation will work in partnership with the Cebu Business Club (CBC) to advocate for better infrastructure in Cebu. REID Foundation will provide technical assistance through a series of workshops on the national and regional economy, national budget, and procurement, among others. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through The Asia Foundation (TAF) is supporting these activities.
