Career changing teachers are in high demand

Career changing teachers are in high demand | CE Example | Scoop.it

When I attended Seattle University to get my Master's in Teaching, I decided to an endorsement to teaching secondary (6th-12th grade) language arts and history. I thought having these two endorsements would make it easy to find a teaching job because i would have the flexibility of teaching two different subjects, instead of being bound to one or the other. Maybe I should have paid attention to the fact that two-thirds of my cohort were also getting endorsed to teach either language arts or history or both. So, two years after graduating, I find myyself facing stiff competition for langauge arts and history teaching positions at both the high school and the middle school level, leaving me as a substitute teacher. While I could find a job in some other field, I feel that it would be a waste of my education and money to abandon teaching. Also, I believe that I am meant to be a teacher, and I need to stick with it. So, while looking for possible teaching positions, I have been noticing what jobs are having difficulty being filled and noticed a high demand for math teachers. This demand has existed for the last few years and does not seem to be abating. My new goal is to obtain a math endorsement so that it will be easier to find a teaching job next year. I have qualms about teaching math, but I think the important thing to keep in mind is that I would finally be teaching.

Class Schedule

After looking at the requirements to get my math endorsement, I know that I need to take a few more math classes.  I think my previous business calculus and statistics classes will satisfy two of the requirements.  Now, I just need to take an algebra, geometry, and trigonometry class at 100 level or higher.  The cheapest way to obtaining my endorsment is to take these classes at a community college.  Also, I need to take online or evening classes so that I can continue to work as a substitute teacher.  Everett Community College seems to be the best option for me.  They have the algebra and trigonometry classes that I need to take.  However, I am having trouble finding a 100-level geometry class.
