CCTV may help catch thug who bashed policeman outside nightclub - Herald Sun

CCTV may help catch thug who bashed policeman outside nightclub - Herald Sun | CCTV for transport and Safe Cities | Scoop.it
NEWLY released surveillance footage of a nightclub patron accused of king-hitting a policeman more than a year ago could finally help solve the crime.
Digital Grape's insight:
If only clubs and pubs used better CCTV! This is yet another example of where licensing authorities could improve quality of CCTV as part of the alcohol licence. Make 1080P the minimum resolution as part of the requirements for CCTV and better images will be able to be used in catching criminals. Its a problem all over the world and we have cost effective IP cameras now!

ESG survey reveals IT's changing attitudes about supporting IP video deployments

ESG survey reveals IT's changing attitudes about supporting IP video deployments | CCTV for transport and Safe Cities | Scoop.it
Despite initial reluctance, most IT pros now onboard with supporting network camera deployments
Digital Grape's insight:
Good to see that the message is finally getting through that IP CCTV is here to stay and IT departments as well as security departments need to work together to make sure that the CCTV is not dumbed down for the sake of bandwidth or storage necessarily. IP CCTV is not like Video on demand , it needs additional bandwidth to be of benefit to security teams and over zealous use of H264 compression parameters can adversely impact quality (usefulness) of the images. We already have problems with identifying people on CCTV through poor storage architectures. With the latest 1080P and higher resolutions cameras lets make sure its fit for purpose as well as able to be used as evidence. The latest standards for CCTV operations in transport set out clear requirements for these parameters and other industries may want to take a look at the standards, (APAT CCTV Standards - TSWG.org) developed in 2011 and update in 2014 for 1080P systems

Drivers are ‘risking lives’ at busy Ford level crossing

Drivers are ‘risking lives’ at busy Ford level crossing | CCTV for transport and Safe Cities | Scoop.it
MOTORISTS are risking their lives by misusing one of the busiest level crossings in the area, transport police have warned.
Digital Grape's insight:
Ford is famous for not only the infamous open prison but also one of the best 'model train stores' in the country. However BTP are still fighting an ongoing battle with idiots who run the red lights on our level crossings (grade crossings). Paul Crowther, BTP Chief Constable has invested in additional CCTV monitoring vans and these are helping win the battle but drivers of all ages fail to understand that its not just their own lives they hazard when driving through, around or under the barriers but also the 100's of lives on the train and in the immediate area should the train derail! Keep up the good work BTP . It should be 6 points and a big fine!!

CCTV doesn't work so we'll spend money on 'bobbies on the beat', says police force - Telegraph

CCTV doesn't work so we'll spend money on 'bobbies on the beat', says police force - Telegraph | CCTV for transport and Safe Cities | Scoop.it
Police commissioner pledges to abandon routine monitoring of CCTV cameras and spend the money on frontline officers
Digital Grape's insight:

This report flies in the face of other Police agencies who are using CCTV evidence in the majority of prosecutions. CCTV is of course but one tool in the arsenal of crime fighting tools and needs to be integrated into operations. Dyfed Powys is of course a rural community ( I'm a Glamorgan boy!) and depending on how many cameras and where they are will determine how useful they are for the Police. Most city centre cameras in the Uk are of course run by the local authority to the Police and there is a clear divide between these agencies and a need for cooperation. It appears that the DP councils are cutting back as is the Police in terms of budgets  however the cost of keeping the CCTV and using it more effectively must surely only be in the 10's of  1,000's of £ and how many bobbies will  that put back in the street! Publicly advising the criminals that no one is watching is , however an adverse step!
