Free Technology for Teachers: Using Images as Research Prompts to Teach Google Search Strategies | Resources for Learning and Sharing | Scoop.it

"Over the last month I've shown the picture that you see to the left during a number of presentations and workshops. I've used the picture to model using pictures to spark students' minds at the beginning of lessons on search strategies. This is a strategy that I've developed by borrowing ideas from Daniel Russell's Search ReSearch activities and Dan Meyer's strategy of using videos and pictures to prompt students to ask math questions."

Developing writing skills (in the Science Classroom) | Resources for Learning and Sharing | Scoop.it

"

The fifteen minute forum was led tonight by Harriet Schuler – our Deputy Leader in Science.

Our science department have been developing  ways in which they can support students with their extended writing – particularly in response to the new style exam questions.  They have had some excellent support from Karen Parks (@betterscience1) who must also be credited for some of the resources and ideas here."

Raising Modern Learners —

Raising Modern Learners — | Resources for Learning and Sharing | Scoop.it
Lisa Burkhalter's insight:

The future of work as more and more people are defining it is not on the test. Measuring creativity and entrepreneurial thinking doesn’t fit in the industrial age agenda, and it’s hard to rank that type of learning against our “global competitors.” We agree with Seth Godin who says that success won’t be built solely on MBAs or success on the traditional path. Success will come for those who instead choose to stand out instead of fit in, those who invent instead of duplicate. (If you haven’t read it, it’s worth the time.)

Randie’s Pinterest Reading List/Board — @joycevalenza NeverEndingSearch

Randie’s Pinterest Reading List/Board — @joycevalenza NeverEndingSearch | Resources for Learning and Sharing | Scoop.it

"Randie Groden just shared an alternate simple and elegant approach that she uses with her K-1 readers and their parents.

"I work in a K-1 school and decided to make a Pinterest Summer Reading Board. http://bit.ly/14XoMn2 ; It’s accessible on all devices, it’s visual for the young students with links to authors’ websites, a few book trailers, and other relevant websites. It was just posted it this week and I’ve been getting great feedback from parents and now I have a bunch following me. "

It’s so simple you may just want to go back and Pinterize your own existing list.  Perhaps create a Board for each grade?"

5 steps to using self-assessment in the classroom

5 steps to using self-assessment in the classroom | Resources for Learning and Sharing | Scoop.it

Implementing some kind of self-assessment is a very good thing, as it enables learners to judge the quality of their work. I’ve done this on an ad-hoc basis at times in the past, but using a formal instrument or procedure can work wonders, even if it has no official bearing on the final outcome.
