40+ iPad Apps for Reading Disabilities ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | CCAFMS iPad Resources | Scoop.it

Whether you're the parent of a child with a reading disability or an educator that works with learning disabled students on a daily basis, you're undoubtedly always looking for new tools to help these bright young kids meet their potential and work through their disability. While there are numerous technologies out there that can help, perhaps one of the richest is the iPad, which offers dozens of applications designed to meet the needs of learning disabled kids and beginning readers alike. Here, we highlight just a few of the amazing apps out there that can help students with a reading disability improve their skills not only in reading, writing, and spelling, but also get a boost in confidence and learn to see school as a fun, engaging activity, not a struggle

Lou Salza's curator insight, March 5, 2014 8:15 AM

Many thanks to our colleague John Evans for this post! Perhaps the most compelling thing about these apps is that they reduce the burden of phonological processing which research demonstrates is at the root of most print challenges causing lack of fluency, fatigue and compromised comprehension. Even those with no print challenges will enjoy the ease of 'immersion reading'--eye reading an  e book and listening ( ear reading ) simultaneously. I will add one app not included in the 40:  Voice dream  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGNYsGVAL4g

is the best I have used but it costs about $10. Well worth it to me. Voice Dream links seamlessly with dropbox, Google drive, Guttenberg etc, has speed controls and choices of voices.  I will even venture an observation that having these technologies available to dyslexic children and adults makes this era of mobile devices the best time in history  to have dyslexia since the before the invention of the printing press!  -Lou
