WorkCycles Fr8 Transport Bike

WorkCycles Fr8 Transport Bike | Cargo bikes | Scoop.it

This is one of my favorites. It's sturdy, has classic good looks, and includes everything one would need with no schnick-schnack. I prefer the cross-frame model, and I love that massive front rack. Addendum: OK, I have to admit that I am now biased...I own this bike, and it is a real workhorse!

EdgeRunner | Xtracycle, Inc. | Cargo bikes | Scoop.it
Xtracycle allows you to convert your existing bicycle into a sport utility cargo bike. You can haul groceries, kids, friends, pets... Fully engage with Xtracycle longtail bicycles!
HR's insight:

Definitely an interesting addition to the long-tail cargo bike family. I'd like to test ride this with a heavy load on that folding side-car. Twenty-inch rear wheel! The website looks good and includes a well-done film of a family putting two Edgerunners to good use.

Pino Porter cargo-bike carries up to 176 pounds

Pino Porter cargo-bike carries up to 176 pounds | Cargo bikes | Scoop.it
Hase Bikes' Pino Porter is a tandem bicycle that can be configured for a variety of cargo-hauling options. It can carry up to 80 kg (176 lb) of your stuff a...
HR's insight:

I do indeed like the Hase Pino, but this appears to be a bike designed for another purpose that is now being _turned into_ a cargo bike of sorts. That's not what I would want in a load hauler. That being said, when it comes to multi-functional bikes, this one would be up there...

‘Cargo bikes are the greenest way to carry shopping – they run on bananas and flapjacks’ | The Times

‘Cargo bikes are the greenest way to carry shopping – they run on bananas and flapjacks’ | The Times | Cargo bikes | Scoop.it
A new generation of family runabouts could change the face of Britain’s roads — and no one will worry about the running costs
HR's insight:

Cargo bikes make it to The Times. The author pushes the costs angle in this article -- cargo bikes, though fairly expensive as bikes go, are of course an alternative to owning a car (or two) when one considers rising gas/petrol prices, parking, insurance, gridlock...

Load hybrid touring, riese und müller

Load hybrid touring, riese und müller | Cargo bikes | Scoop.it

Riese & Müller's _Load_ is new, so I don't know a lot about it. It appears to be available only with the Bosch motor...interesting that there is not a standard model without an e-option -- perhaps I've missed something -- but I assume we'll hear more in the near future. One interesting aspect of the Load's appeal is the fact that you can separate the front from the rear part -- great for storage or transport. "Das touring ist mit einer hochwertigen Shimano Deore XT-10-Gang-Kettenschaltung und einer Luftfedergabel ausgestattet. Scheibenbremsen und eine besond..."

Boda Boda Cargo Cruiser

Boda Boda Cargo Cruiser | Cargo bikes | Scoop.it

"Yuba’s Boda Boda Cargo Cruiser elevates utility cycling. The integrated rear rack makes it easy to pick up a friend, a flat of strawberries, or power tools." This new entry (Summer 2012) to the field appears to have a shorter wheel base than the Big Dummy, and the curves and retroish looks will appeal to those who want a cargo bike with "style" (whatever that might mean in this case). At first glance...not my cup of tea, but that is also just my 2-bit opinion.

Why You Should Be On A Cargo Bike

Why You Should Be On A Cargo Bike | Cargo bikes | Scoop.it

"I used to care about weight. I'm one of those OCD types who meticulously weighed components out on my gram scale. I'm the jerk with the hollow pin chain and all Dura Ace on his carbon fiber LOOK 595..." The author is pretty darned excited about cargo bikes, as well he should be! This article is for the uninitiated, I suppose, but it's still evidence of what does indeed appear to be more than just a trend.

Pedalpower: Berliner Lastenrad | Cargo bikes | Scoop.it

I probably wouldn't choose one of these given the hilliness of my local area and my needs, but these are of course great for transporting kids, beer, and recyclable glass.

Flying Pigeon LA — Pashley Princess Sovereign | Cargo bikes | Scoop.it

I realize that this is not what most would refer to as a "cargo bike," but it would still be a great urban utility vehicle. "The quintessential English town and country bicycle with timeless traditional looks and impeccable build quality." (Source: Flying Pigeon LA)

An "Eigenbau"

This is fairly interesting, though I must admit I am more of a relaxed-seating-position-and-fenders type of guy when it comes to cargo bikes.

Cargo Bikes: The New Station Wagon

Cargo Bikes: The New Station Wagon | Cargo bikes | Scoop.it
Longtails, bakfiets and other two-wheel workhorses are winning over casual and avid cyclists alike with one supersize feature: the ability to haul it all
HR's insight:

So cargo bikes make it into the WSJ, and the article is not just a quick single-column one-off. Excellent.

Big, strong frame, a motor, a Bakfiets form which can also be changed due to its modular set-up...and you've got the Urban Arrow. Not much out there on this bike yet, but it was a Eurobike Award winner. The container walls are made out of styrofoam. "Urban Arrow designs and builds bikes for Smart Urban Mobility which are the ultimate and safe alternative for your car!"

Transport - Trek Bicycle | Cargo bikes | Scoop.it

"Take it all with you. This built-to-haul bike is the ultimate in two-wheeled cargo utility."

So Trek is now in the game as well. I suppose it is encouraging to see some of the "big boys" entering the market, qué no? This is of course a longtail in the style of Surly's Big Dummy or the various Xtracycle configurations. Note also the front rack.
