University of California, Berkeley School of Information’s dean, AnnaLee Saxenian, often talks about a visit, in the ‘90s, by a high-level delegation from Japan. The Japanese kept asking where the government’s administrative offices were. They wanted to meet the people who did the central planning for Silicon Valley in order to learn directly from them. They couldn’t comprehend, said Saxenian, that such an authority didn’t exist -- that Silicon Valley thrives without government intervention.

Different cultural diversity strokes for different folks in Finland and Europe

By Enrique Tessieri

"One matter that shines through after reading and responding to the thousands of threads on Migrant Tales is that multiculturalism, racism and inequality mean different things...

One of the biggest myths pushed by anti-immigration groups... is that immigrants in general and specific groups don’t want to adapt. This could not be further from the truth. Since we are all social animals, our first and foremost aim anywhere is to adapt."

Cultural Diversity and Academic Achievement

One of the most serious and explosive issues in the United States today is how to meet the educational needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students. If current trends in educational achievement continue, millions of students (primarily poor African-American, Asian, Native American, and Hispanic) will not obtain the education necessary for full participation in the economic and civic life of the country.

Culture Crossing works as a global resource for students and many other people to further their cross-cultural exploration by allowing them to find information on over 200 countries. The information on these country guides is submitted by either natives or residents of the featured countries, and it is checked for credibility by cross referencing with a variety of sources. Therefore, it is important to keep in mind that the information is generalized and holds the purpose of introducing people to the diversity of groups between communities. Teachers can use this guide to introduce Stage 2 students to some of the basic cultural tips and brainstorm the diversities within and between communities in small groups. The students can then research the chosen communities in depth and come back to Culture Crossing website to add their cultural knowledge to the guide. The guide may be checked by the teacher to assess students’ understanding on the diversity of groups between various communities, and can be used to respond to each child individually, giving feedback for further research or related activities. It is also possible to get students to work on activity guides, provided on this website, with their families which is an enormous opportunity to encourage them to go on a cultural adventure at home. According to Hall & Hall (1990), “Each culture has its own way of seeing and doing things, based on unstated rules, and these hidden differences often make cooperation difficult”. I believe Culture Crossing would be a great start to help students to break the “logjam” caused by culturally based misapprehensions, by showing students how groups of a common culture share information, methods of coding and retrieving information.

What Did the Navajo Nation Teach Wells Fargo About Cultural Competence? | DiversityInc - Cultural Diversity - Diversity Management - Workplace Diversity - Workforce Diversity

What Did the Navajo Nation Teach Wells Fargo About Cultural Competence? | DiversityInc - Cultural Diversity - Diversity Management - Workplace Diversity - Workforce Diversity | Careermangoe - Cultural Diversity | Scoop.it

Wells Fargo’s Jon Campbell, social-responsibility group executive vice president, never would have guessed that he’d develop a close working relationship with the Navajo Nation, one where they’d accept him as one of their own.

This is the story he shared with attendees at DiversityInc’s November 2011 event in Washington, D.C. Wells Fargo is No. 40 in The DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity. Growing up as a third-generation Scandinavian in the Midwest meant Campbell had little experience with diversity before he moved to Arizona for his career, where he became the president of Norwest Bank Arizona.

In his position, Campbell was challenged with mitigating acquisition protests from Navajo leaders. The bank had been involved in an acquisition with Citibank and several of the acquired branches were located in the Navajo Nation, the largest American Indian reservation in the United States. The Navajo decided to use this opportunity to get their needs and wants heard.

“I had no experience with Native American culture,” said Campbell. His first duty: to meet with the tribe leaders on location. “Here’s this white guy from the Midwest in a suit showing up at tribal offices. It was not a good start.”

Multilingual Europe | it’s always heartening to see the value the European Union places on linguistic and cultural diversity.

Multilingual Europe | it’s always heartening to see the value the European Union places on linguistic and cultural diversity. | Careermangoe - Cultural Diversity | Scoop.it

The 2012 Eurobarometer Report “Europeans and their languages” was published last month and makes fascinating reading. To begin with, it’s always heartening to see the value the European Union places on linguistic and cultural diversity:

There are 23 officially recognised languages, more than 60 indigenous regional and minority languages, and many non-indigenous languages spoken by migrant communities. The EU, although it has limited influence because educational and language policies are the responsibility of individual Member States, is committed to safeguarding this linguistic diversity and promoting knowledge of languages, for reasons of cultural identity and social integration and cohesion, and because multilingual citizens are better placed to take advantage of the economic, educational and professional opportunities created by an integrated Europe. A mobile workforce is key to the competitiveness of the EU economy.
