Timothy McCarthy was an irish immigrant who moved to America about 150 years ago. He founded his business what is now known as McCarthy Construction in 1864. He had ten kids! They started out as a family owned business building farmhouses and barns.

Also it is owned by the employees which helps make it better quality because of the fact that the employees have their name on it specifically. This also helps to hold the company accountable since it can't make sole decisions.

Mike Bolen is McCarthy's chairman and chief executive officer. $2.5 billion in annual revenues. They do a lot with "Heart Hats" to help out in the community. They support a large number more as well. The outlook for this company continues to grow larger.

Compare and Contrast

Both started as a family owned business. Bechtel followed up and still to this day is in the family. McCarthy however went away from family ownership and the employees own it together. Both of them are very large and popular firms. Bechtel has been ranked best for 13 years running whereas McCarthy is only ranked one of the best. Both Entrepreneurs had a vision and both saw it through until they died. Bechtel followed that path and McCarthy did not.

Mr. Warren A. Bechtel was born on September
12, 1872 in Freeport, Illinois. He was one of six brothers and sisters. He had
four children, three boys and a girl. He was also a self-taught man in
engineering and business. He started to develope his business in 1906 and by
1912 had a crew. This all started by following the railroads west.

Warren led his company to many great projects
which greatly benefitted the U.S. One was a 106 mile link for the Northwestern
Pacific Railroad through the Eel River Canyon. He also built roads and the
Bowman Dam, at the time it was the second-largest rock filled dam. Then he took
part in building the great Hoover Dam.

Factors Necessary

For Construction there are a few major factors you need but not very many minor. You must have the proper equipment, the knowledge to do it, the workers to do it, and the funds for supplies. This has not changed much since these two men's day. The only thing that has really changed is the techniques to do these jobs which in turn calls for upgraded equipment, but thats a generation change.
