Study Shows iPads Could Improve Literacy Skills in Young Children - InformED

Study Shows iPads Could Improve Literacy Skills in Young Children - InformED | Capturing Stories Through Play | Scoop.it
A recent study has found that kindergartners who use iPads in school are likely to score higher on literacy tests than those who do not.

The study, which was carried out in Auburn, Maine early last year, looked at 266 kindergartners who had been given free iPads to use in class as part of an experiment. Out of the 266 students, 129 were given lessons using iPads, while the remaining 137 were taught through traditional methods.

The results, which were published on Apple’s unofficial tech blog, TUAW, showed that in addition to better scores in every literacy test, children who were taught through the use of an iPad also showed an increased interest in learning and were more enthusiastic about going to school."

While the iPad certainly has huge potential as an educational tool, it is important to remember that iPad is just another tool. To bring about positive results in the classroom, a lot depends on how it is implemented as well as the teaching methods employed.

Ten Disciplines of a Learner: Learning vs Mastery

Ten Disciplines of a Learner: Learning vs Mastery | Capturing Stories Through Play | Scoop.it

Ten Disciplines of a Learner
We decided to continue the conversation on this topic at a faculty meeting. Several meetings later we had a new report card. We decided to give two grades and average them—one for “Learning,” the other for “Mastery.”

Sara might get an “F” in mastery and an “A” in learning, culminating in a “C” for the course. To be rigorous we picked ten observable behaviors and named them “Disciplines of a Learner:”

1.     Asks questions

2.     Builds on other people’s ideas

3.     Uses mistakes as learning opportunities

4.     Takes criticism constructively

5.     Speaks up

6.     Welcomes a challenge

7.     Takes risks

8.     Listens with an openness to change

9.     Perseveres in tasks

10.   Decides when to lead and when to follow.

Love this examination of 'Disciplines of a Learner" that clearly distinguishes between master and learning. I think we should demonstrate greater value to the lifelong skill of learning .

Another idea of using Book Creator - June 2014 Blog Post

Another idea of using Book Creator - June 2014 Blog Post | Capturing Stories Through Play | Scoop.it

I am going to start this month's blog post by thanking everyone for the great feedback to iPad Teacher Guide (2nd Edition) and for making it the Number 1 Education book on the iBook Store in the UK, Australia, USA and Canada. For more information, visit www.ipadteacherguide.co.uk

I know many of you are using Book Creator in your lessons and there has been countless blogs about it, including quite a few posts within this blog. One idea that did not make it into the latest version of the book is adding questions with audio feedback into Book Creator. I find I am using Book Creator more and more to create resources for my pupils and I am now putting questions at the end of each section. I write a multiple choice question, place 3-4 possible answers in as either text, photos or both then add an audio response to each one. For example, saying it is right or giving clues when it is wrong. Book Creator allows you to hide a audio clip so that pupils can tap the answer and hear the response. The audio icon completely disappears when you open the book in IBooks. This has worked the other way with pupils writing their questions at the end of their topic books and sharing with their peers.

Fun App for Kids Turns Writing Into Interactive Game | Edudemic | Capturing Stories Through Play | Scoop.it
Do your students suffer from writer’s block? I’ve found a cure for what ails them: Writing Challenge for Kids, an app by Literautas. After reading several positive online reviews, I tried this app with my students and got results that surpassed my wildest expectations.

With this app, the task of brainstorming a story introduction, scenes, and characters becomes a game. Working against the clock, students respond to specific prompts that guide them through the story-writing process. It’s fun, it’s fast, and, as the name suggests, it’s challenging. Read on to discover if this challenge is right for your students.

Augmented Reality Coloring Pages- ClassTechTips.com | Capturing Stories Through Play | Scoop.it
After reading this article in the New York Times yesterday I started thinking about one of my favorite coloring apps for children.  No matter how old or young you are coloring requires a combination of skills that can be applied in various situations.  Combining coloring with augmented reality is an easy way to introduce this exciting technology to students.  The colAR Mix app (available for iOS and Android devices) is a super fun choice with plenty of free options.

Kim Flintoff's curator insight, April 17, 2015 10:18 PM

The lesson here for higher ed is about developing familiarity with new technologies.  The possibilities for AR across all disciplines are immense, but often students (and teachers) find it difficult to initially connect with a use that allows them to start to conceive of how it can be used.  Something as ubiquitous as colouring is used in many contexts (think of the Anatomy colouring book used by many health practitioners to learn about systems and connections).

Jarrod Johnson's curator insight, April 18, 2015 8:15 PM

Just bought a colouring in book for Sophie that does this. The fact that I can make my own is cool.

Comprehensive List of Free e-Book Websites for your e-Reader

Comprehensive List of Free e-Book Websites for your e-Reader | Capturing Stories Through Play | Scoop.it

If you own an e-reader you often can only buy e-books from the bookstore that is bundled on your device. Many of the budget e-readers out there don’t even have a bookstore that is accessible by users and many people are left to fend for themselves to load content on it.

Here is a comprehensive free e-book resource catalog online. All of these books are hardware agnostic, which means they are not locked by DRM (Digital Rights Management). All you have to do is simply download a title and load in via the USB cable from your computer to your e-reader. Many of these sites also provide the books in more than one format, so they will work with your Amazon Kindle, Kobo, Barnes and Noble Nook, Sony e-reader and hundreds of others.
