Josephine Bakhita was a Sudanese-born former slave who became a Roman Catholic nun in Italy, where she lived and worked  for 45 years. In 2000, she was declared a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. In 2012, the Durham Catholic District School Board opened a new elementary school in Ajax, ON, which is named in honour of St. Josephine Bakhita.
