Quick Tip: Hiking Socks

Quick Tip: Hiking Socks | Camping and Survival | Scoop.it

When buying a pair of hiking socks for warmer or wet environments look for vertical stitching on the inside tube part of the sock. This will wick moisture away from your leg.

Gear We Like: Maglite Solitare

Gear We Like: Maglite Solitare | Camping and Survival | Scoop.it

One of my favorite pieces of camping gear is my Maglite it is an ultra-light (no pun intended) light that will fit into my pocket anywhere I go. I'll admit that the light is not about to set any record, far from it but I have found that it is enough to get all of my gear organized before hitting the hay. It is usually not the only flashlight I take unless I'm going backcountry manly because of its brightness. I encourage you to try one now!

Positives!: Only weighs .86 Grams , Costs about $10

Negatives: Not so bright

Make Char Cloth

Make Char Cloth | Camping and Survival | Scoop.it

Whether you enjoy camping, just want a faster way to light up the backyard fire pit, or you're just an amateur survivalist, keeping some char cloth handy is a great way to quickly light a small fire without having to deal with kindling or using too much accelerant, like lighter fluid or multiple matches. It's also really easy to make.
To make your own char cloth, all you need is any 100% natural fiber, like cotton, a tin you can keep the char cloth in with a hole in the top (so it stays ventilated) and a good fire to start with. Check out the post to see full instructions.
