Elvie and Calpurnia

Elvie and Calpurnia | Calpurnia | Scoop.it
Lizard's insight:

This is my second mom, Elvie. Elvie has been taking care of me since I was 1. She took care of me when I was sick, comforted me when I was sad, and played with me all the time when I was little. She isn't around as much now because I am older, but she has been a huge asset to my life and childhood and has influenced me in so many ways. She is so sweet and loving and I know how much she cares about me. I think my relationship with Elvie is very similar to Scout's relationship with Capurnia. I used to be a major tomboy, just like Scout and still am in a way, but Elvie and Calpurnia embrance the fact that we are tomboys and love the spoty and adventurous side of us. In addition, Calpurnia loves Scout with all her heart and even though they go through struggles and get in fights sometimes, Scout loves her too. The same is true for Elvie and I, and even though we have our differences, I dont know what I would do without her.

Change-Taylor Swift Lyrics

Thanks for watching :) subsribe
Lizard's insight:

The song, "Change" by Taylor Swift is similar to Calpurnia's emotions in "To Kill A Mockingbird." In relation to Calpurnia's emotions, the "change" is racism. The lyrics, "its hard to fight when the fight aint fair" and "because these things will change, can you feel it now, these walls that they build up to hold us back will fall down" represent Calpurnia's emotions about racism. "Its hard to fight when the fight aint fair" describes how African Amercans are trying to stick up for themselves and change things, but it is extremely hard because almost everyone is working against them and they have limited resources and support. The second cited quotation represents how Calpurnia feels, that things will change eventually, they are already starting to get better, and that one day the complextion of your pigment won't matter, everyone will be equal.

Lizard's insight:

I think Calpurnia would really enjoy this set of stainless steel cookware. She loves to cook and is always making Scout and Jem their favorite food. For example, when Scout threatened to run away Calpurnia made her her favorite meal to make her happy. Calpurnia uses her cooking skills to her advantage while working at the Finch household and I think she would love and greatly appreciate this set of cookware.

Reading-painting-African-American.jpg (229x298 pixels) | Calpurnia | Scoop.it
Lizard's insight:

This piece of artwork relates to Calpurnia's emotions because this is an African American Women reading and she looks very comfortable and secure doing so. Calpurnia is a lierate African American women in the 1930's which is very rare. However, she is comfortable reading and writing and I can imagine her looking as secure as this women is when she reads.

EDUCATION FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS | The Handbook of Texas Online| Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) | Calpurnia | Scoop.it
Lizard's insight:

This article relates to Calpurnia's plot line and interests becuase she knows how to read and write and very few African Americans know how to. It is very difficult for African Americans to obtain education during this time period and only 4 people in Calpurnias church, including her are able to. This makes Caplurnia very unique and special.

Taylor Swift - The Best Day (Lyrics) with her childhood and family pictures Note: I do not own anything; and all rights go to Taylor Swift, Big Machine Recor...
Lizard's insight:

"The Best Day" by Taylor Swift is similar to Calpurnia's emotions about her and Scout's relationship and how Scout can always rely on Calpurnia and go to her for help of comfort. Lyrics that represent their relationship are "Im 13 now and dont know how my friends could be so mean, I come home crying and you hold me tight..." and " And I know you're not scarred of anything at all." The first referenced quote describes how Calpurnia is always there to comfort Scout when Dill and Jem are hostile towards her. The second referenced quote explains how Calpurnia knows that Scout isn't afraid of anything and is the toughest little girl out there.

Lizard's insight:

Aibileen Clark from "The Help" is similar to Calpurnia because they are both headstrong African American women. Aibileen loves Mae Mobley with all her heart and takes very good care of her just as Calpurnia takes care of Scout.

Lizard's insight:

This is a traditional dress that African American maid's would have worn to work in the 1930's. I can imagie Calpurnia wore something like it, but it was probably a dull grey or black. I think Capurnia would have loved this one, and its vibrant green color, and would have loved to have it, but hers was most likely grey or black.

Lizard's insight:

I think this gong would be extremely useful to Calpurnia in calling Scout and Jem home for lunch and dinner throughout the novel. Jem and Scout are often out being adventurous and I can imagine Calpurnia has a hard time finding them and getting them home for meals. With this gong, she could call them home for meals easily! Im sure she would absolutely love it!

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings - Another poem written by the Famous Maya Angelou talented sister. Send this poem to a friend. "African - American Poetry"

Welcome to Mr.
Africa Poetry Lounge! You have entered into The
Lizard's insight:

This poem depicts similar themes and emotions that Calpurnia feels throughout the book. It depicts a theme of racism and black people not being "let out of their cage." I feel that the "free bird" in the poem represents white people and how many opportunities they are given. I also feel that the "caged bird" represents African American's and the limited opportunities they have. Calpurnia is a very intelligent women and I feel that if she has the chance, she could do something amazing with her life, much better than being a nanny.

faces_black_jesus.jpg (450x358 pixels) | Calpurnia | Scoop.it
Lizard's insight:

Calpurnia takes Scout and Jem to mass at her Church on Sunday and you can tell it is very important to her. She is a part of a lovely community and her son, Zeebo, works at the church and is a very important part of the mass. Also, she insists on giving Jem and Scout her own money to put in the collection, and it is a lot compared to what she gets paid.  You can tell her church has shaped her values by the way she acts and by her selfless and generous donation to the collection that day.

Wages in the 1930s | eHow

Wages in the 1930s | eHow | Calpurnia | Scoop.it
Known as the decade of the Great Depression, the 1930s have come to represent the worst economic time in the history of the United States.
Lizard's insight:

This article tells about the wages in the 80's. There was no minimum wage and laborers were paid whatever their employer offered them. In 1938, a minimum wage of $0.35 an hour was set up, so I assume Calpurnia's pay was very low. Money was probably a prominent issue in her life, considering that she was working for an extremely poor family.

Maroon 5- She Will Be Loved With Lyrics On Screen

Download: http://amzn.to/XQ4Uie Maroon 5's "She Will Be Loved" with the right lyrics on screen! From their first album "Songs About Jane" I know its kinda "o...
Lizard's insight:

"She Will Be Loved" by Maroon 5 has similar emotions to how Calppurnia feels about Scout. Calpurnia feels bad for Scout because she doesnt't have a mother and takes pity on her when Jem tells her to get lost. Some lyrics in the song that relate to Calpurnia's relationship with Scout are, " Look for the girl with the broken smile... And she will be loved" and "I know where you hide, alone in your car, know all of the things that make you who you are, I know that goodbye means nothing at all, comes back and makes me catch her every time she falls." These lyrics explain that even though Scout isnt the perfect little girl she is beautiful and amazing in Calpurina's eyes and Calpurnia willl love her no matter what. It also describes how even though Scout gets mad at Calpurnia a lot she never means what she says and always knows deep down inside how much Calpurnia means to her. In addition, Calpurnia is always there to catch Scout when she falls, or when Jem and Dill disclude her.

Lizard's insight:

August in "Secret Life of Bees" is similar to Calpurnia because they both act as the mother figure in the children they take care of lives. Both Lily and Scout lost their mothers early on, and August and Calpurnia do motherly things for them and love them like there mothers would.
