The Gamification Guide - How To Gamify Your Class in 3 Stages

The Gamification Guide - How To Gamify Your Class in 3 Stages | CALL | Scoop.it
Gamification is the use of game-mechanics and elements in non-game contexts. For the last six years, I’ve used gamification to turn my classroom into a video game to help motivate, engage, and empower my students. I’ve done hundreds of presentations on my unique style of gamification and have worked with dozens of teachers to turn their classroom into a video game. One of the things I’m always told is that an in-depth guide would be useful, so I wrote one!

Common Misconceptions of Teaching with Technology

Common Misconceptions of Teaching with Technology | CALL | Scoop.it
All of the above misconceptions promote a sense of fear among educators and impede the adaption of educational technology. But we can’t turn a blind eye to the fact that technology is going to pervade into every aspects of education and changes, both subtle and disruptive, are inevitable. Teachers, technologists and other stakeholders such as government should work together and make the best use of technology to improve teaching and learning and prepare our children for the future.

ESL Teacher Training in 3D Virtual Worlds

ESL Teacher Training in 3D Virtual Worlds | CALL | Scoop.it

Although language learning in 3D Virtual Worlds (VWs) has become a focus of recent research, little is known about the knowledge and skills teachers need to acquire to provide effective task-based instruction in 3D VWs and the type of teacher training that best prepares instructors for such an endeavor. This study employs a situated learning approach to teacher training and explores what online teaching skills emerge in the process of collaborative situated learning, how these skills develop, and whether collaborative situated learning is an effective method of training instructors to teach in 3D VWs.

Planning For Critical Thinking: A 5-Step Model

Like anything else that you’d like to see happen in your classroom, promoting critical thinking skills is a matter of planning and priority.

While teachers are often admonished to push students towards higher-level thinking activities, beyond Bloom’s Taxonomy (or one of TeachThought’s own learning taxonomies), there are precious few models and frameworks that are accessible, comprehensive, or universal enough to be used on a daily basis.

21st Century Technology Skills Are a Core Competency for Today’s Graduates | CALL | Scoop.it

Our students need to be comfortable with the information technologies that are inextricably linked to the 21st century skills the work place requires, and teachers need to help pave the way.

A May, 2013 Gallup Study, summarized in this article, “In the U.S., 21stCentury Skills Linked to Work Success”, indicates that young U.S. adults who say they developed 21st century skills in their last year of school are more likely to self-report higher work quality.

The ESL/ELL Teacher’s Survival Guide: Read to Use Strategies, Tools, and Activities for Teaching All Levels

The ESL/ELL Teacher’s Survival Guide: Read to Use Strategies, Tools, and Activities for Teaching All Levels | CALL | Scoop.it

All too often teachers are required to come up with innovative, content-based lessons for their students on a daily basis with little time to search. Teachers of ESL, both seasoned and novice, will benefit greatly from having The ESL/EFL Teacher’s Survival Guide in their arsenal.

This multi-purpose book is written by two California ESL teachers who sought to offer a book based on interesting teaching strategies they have used for years in their own classrooms. In addition to their classroom testing, Ferlazzo and Hull-Sypnieski provide supporting research for all of their teaching suggestions.

They also recognize the need to satisfy state-mandated standards (a sample outline of the California State ESL/ELD standards can be seen throughout the book). While the book is written specifically for grades 4-12, the lessons are varied, making it easily adapted for adult learners.

Developing and Implimenting Competency-based ICT Training for Teachers

Developing and Implimenting Competency-based ICT Training for Teachers | CALL | Scoop.it
In this highly connected and rapidly changing world, there is no doubt that teachers play a key role in successfully integrating ICT into education. Realizing the importance of teachers’ capacity to do this, governments, teacher education institutions, the private sector, and NGOs alike provide training opportunities – ranging from the skills needed to use a particular software, to integrating educational technologies, to innovating teaching to promote 21st century skills. However, more often than not, teachers’ actual use of ICT in the classroom is reported as incremental, merely reinforcing traditional teacher-centred approaches by using slides and drill-and-practice exercises.

The Future of Learning - Learning {Re}imagined - Medium

We’re seeing a phenomenal investment going into educational technology right now, some real big investments, but these investments are in using technology to maintain and industrialise nineteenth century practices. It’s as if we agreed that the purpose of education was simply content distribution and testing, and therefore we don’t really need skilled teachers. We could actually offload that to technology.

Addressing Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs with Technology

Addressing Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs with Technology | CALL | Scoop.it

Technology is way too often given a bad rap by administrators and educators as a distraction or a hazard for students.  When technology is integrated intentionally with foresight and with intention of addressing specific growth-oriented goals, it increases the potential to help students learn, develop, and grow in unique ways.  It can be used to help address the needs as described by Maslow.

12 Principles Of Collaboration In Learning

Collaboration is among the most-often promoted fluencies of 21st century learning (along with creativity and communication).

However, there are very few frameworks or models that exist to support the development of better collaboration forms. As it is, in many K-12 learning environments, collaboration is limited to teacher-created grouping, or more scattered project-based learning groups that converge on a single project and thus a single goal.
