Telefónica Digital buys WebRTC and video chat expert Tokbox

Telefónica Digital buys WebRTC and video chat expert Tokbox | C2M : veille Digital Media | Scoop.it

Video chat startup turned real-time communications platform provider Tokbox has been acquired by Telefónica Digital, the international business arm of Spain’s telco giant Telefónica. Together, they want to provide communication services to developers, combining SMS, voice, video and billing with one simple API.

Tokbox has been an early champion of WebRTC, the effort to add voice and video real-time communications to the browser without the need for any plug-ins, and was one of the first to actually launch a WebRTC implementation.

Panelists Mull What’s Next for UltraViolet | C2M : veille Digital Media | Scoop.it

Going back a year, when UltraViolet was first launched, Mark Teitell couldn’t have guessed where the service would be today.

Now?

“So far, so good,” the GM and executive director of the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE) said Oct. 17 at Digital Hollywood.

Next for UltraViolet is the completion and launch of the service’s common file format (CFF). Once UltraViolet’s CFF is finalized, UltraViolet files downloaded are expected to work across platforms and devices, instead of each retailer having different files for their service.

Speculation around Apple TV abounds

Speculation around Apple TV abounds | C2M : veille Digital Media | Scoop.it

With the launch of its iPad Mini, Apple now has a device for nearly all purposes. But the company still hasn't offered its version of the biggest home device of all -- the TV.

Analysts argue that many consumers want a gadget that is as easy and sleek as an iPad to manage and operate their home entertainment systems. Apple, it is hoped, will reinvent that living-room box into a sophisticated system that allows people to effortlessly access limitless entertainment and information on one device -- everything from HBO shows to Internet videos to games to email.

Twitter Dominates Live TV Because Social TV Is Failing

Twitter Dominates Live TV Because Social TV Is Failing | C2M : veille Digital Media | Scoop.it

So here is the undeniable fact: Twitter currently dominates live TV because it enables these “come-in come-out” experiences that are light, delightful and informative. But ultimately, Twitter is also dominating because of the mistakes we are making in the social TV industry.

The problem today with second screen apps is the assumptions around existing second screen behavior. It’s true that people are also on their laptops, smartphones or tablets while watching TV. But people are checking email, on Facebook, and doing other things. The other major problem is that second screen apps fail to answer the ultimate question: Why should a user open up YOUR app versus the other billion apps out there around TV?

iPad Mini is made for video, second-screen TV

iPad Mini is made for video, second-screen TV | C2M : veille Digital Media | Scoop.it

As anticipated, Apple has introduced the iPad Mini, a 7.2mm-thin aluminum-body tablet with a 7.9-inch screen that will go for just $329 for the 16 GB Wi-Fi-only version. It will start shipping in the United States on 2 November.

Its smaller size and lower price tag makes it ideal for becoming a second-screen device to the television, according to some industry-watchers. "The launch of the iPad Mini could send Apple's dominance in the tablet market into overdrive," said Steve Morris, systems architect at digital TV specialist ANT. "The smaller, cheaper tablet won't just be a device for holidays; it has the potential to extend TV services every day."

3 Reasons Microsoft Should Buy Netflix

3 Reasons Microsoft Should Buy Netflix | C2M : veille Digital Media | Scoop.it

Just when it seemed as if Netflix  was going to have another week of shrinking, the picture got bigger.

A rumor surfaced on Friday afternoon, indicating that Microsoft  was interested in acquiring Netflix. The unfounded story was so appealing that Netflix's stock -- trading flat halfway through the trading day -- skyrocketed to close with a 13% gain on Friday.

Now, it's easy to see how this chatter can start making sense to investors. When Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced earlier this month that he'll resign from Microsoft's board, the knee-jerk reaction by many Netflix watchers was that he was stepping down because Mr. Softy was inquiring about purchasing the leading video service.

BBC offers solution for connected TV fragmented market

BBC offers solution for connected TV fragmented market | C2M : veille Digital Media | Scoop.it

While many connected television devices and displays now support web standards such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript, they invariably differ in their capabilities and conformance to standards. The BBC has developed an abstraction layer to decouple its own applications from these underlying device complexities. The corporation is planning to make its TV Application Layer available to third parties to help stimulate the market for connected television applications.

Although the emerging HTML5 specification is often seen as the solution to interoperable web applications, in practice there are many differences in compatibility between devices that claim support for web standards. This is a familiar problem on the web but the fragmentation of different flavours appears to be even more of an issue with consumer electronics products.

The BBC TV Application Layer or TAL attempts to deal with the differences between devices, such as remote control key mapping, media player interfaces, networking and storage. In theory this means that the BBC can develop and deploy applications on a well-defined interface without being aware of the specifics and idiosyncrasies of each device.
