Sports and special programming accounted for almost 60% of second screen activity in the first quarter of 2013, according to new stats by US social TV analytics company Trendrr.

The firm logged 205 million social interactions in the quarter around one-off sporting and special events.” These included the Superbowl, which accounted for a massive 52 million second screen interactions. Other notable tent pole events included the Grammy Awards with 15 million interactions, the Oscars with 13 million and the NFL Playoffs with 12 million.

American mobile video watchers are almost twice as likely to watch videos shared by friends as they are via web search, according to a survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of web TV content sharing site Telly.

The study – conducted online in April among over 2,000 US adults – reveals that 78 million American mobile device owners (35 per cent) watch video on their mobile device. Of these 78 million, 52 million mobile video watchers (67 per cent) discover content from friends via social recommendations, versus 32 million American mobile video watchers (41 per cent) who find videos on their mobile devices via search engines.

Social TV usage has tripled in the US over the past 18 months, according to a new report from US research firm The Diffusion Group, which adds that the 10mn monthly active users exert an “outsized influence” as mainstream media outlets repeat and amplify their reactions.

Social TV is expected to continue to grow significantly over the next seven years, more than doubling by 2020, driving major changes in the business landscape for television and over-the-top video.

According to Joel Espelien, author of the report: “For many TV viewers, social TV is fundamentally altering the television experience, from a passive consumption medium to a new kind of community experience, in which millions of Americans gather around the digital water cooler to discuss TV shows in real-time as they watch programming.

Two major trends in the wireless industry appear to be converging. On one hand, operators continue to struggle with over-the-top players like Google, Viber, Facebook, Messenger and Skype cutting into their voice and messaging revenues. On the other hand, operators have quietly been inking deals with content providers in order to offer cheap or free access to specific services, a practice some have dubbed the toll-free data model. Now, it seems some companies are hoping toll-free data models can put wireless carriers back in the game and give them some leverage against the OTT tide.

The number of households in North American using the Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) standard as their home networking technology of choice will exceed 25mn by 2014, with similar numbers for the HomePlug standard in Western Europe, according to ABI Research.

The first significant shipments of the HomePlug AV2 and MoCA 2.0 standards are expected to be seen in 2013, offering higher speeds as well as more robustness under different line conditions. Not all devices shipped using the new standards will support the full set of features however, so many will not offer gigabit speeds.
