If CES 2013 was the death of 3D TV, then CES 2014 is the death of Roku, Chromecast, Apple TV, and other digital media streamers/players.

With the continued push towards smart TVs with built-in streaming apps, 4K displays that have an embedded Android media player, UHDTVs breaking below $1000, and news that Roku will release a line of TVs that come pre-loaded with the company’s streaming software, the standalone media streamer is fast approaching the end of its life.

L'avenir des téléviseurs était en débat "passionné" avec Philips (François Caroff), Panasonic (Christophe Decloux), LG (Julien Danigo), Sony (Stéphane Labrousse) et deux journalistes des Numériques (PP Garcia et Vincent Alzieu), tous rassemblés sur scène et en public sur le salon La Factory 2012.

 

Débat animé, initié sous le test un brin provocant de : "TV : nous faut-il du 4K, du 8K, de l'Oled ?". Évidemment : non, on vivrait très bien sans ! Derrière la question réelle est : nous survend-on des technologies onéreuses et inutiles, ou la qualité d'image va-t-elle vraiment progresser ?

The 4K logo was being showcased prominently at this week’s MIPTV programming market in Cannes, where there were three dedicated sessions devoted to encouraging 4K production for TV, and sponsored in part by Sony. SES played an active part in the ‘broadcasters’ panel with Norbert Hoelzle (CCO) speaking alongside the BBC’s Mike Gunton (head of the BBC’s Natural History Unit) and Gary Davey, head of programming from Sky Deutschland.
