A Rovi study has provided updated metrics on connected TV owner demographics and usage for the first quarter 2013. When compared with previous results, the findings suggest the market for connected TVs is maturing rapidly.

The audience for connected TVs is shifting, with females now – for the first time since Rovi and Decipher began polling the market in 2011 – representing the largest portion of owners at 55 per cent. Owners of connected TVs now represent a far more balanced range of age groups with a decrease in 25-34 year olds and an increase in older viewers.

Industry body the Open IPTV Forum has published a profile of HTML5 and other related web technologies aimed at connected TV services and devices, intended to make it easier for developers to create rich apps and services that work with connected TVs.

The new release describes a common profile based on the latest, stable web technologies that are expected to be implemented by connected TV manufacturers for the creation of rich HTML5 applications, including CSS and DOM3.

Microsoft has signed an agreement with Time Warner Cable to bring up to 300 of the US cableco’s channels to Xbox 360 later this summer, with viewers able to control the experience with their voice via the Kinect peripheral.

The deal is the largest that Microsoft has signed to date with a TV operator for its Xbox platform, and involves a large number of popular channels including BBC World News, Bravo, Cartoon Network, CNN, Comedy Central and Food Network.

Of the 20 major US brands surveyed by the Association of National Advertisers in March 2013, 65% said they planned to increase their investments in mobile—the highest percentage of marketers upping investments in any channel studied. A wide-ranging study by US network Viacom has found that there are three key types of motivation for viewers to engage in TV-related social media activities – functional, communal and playful – with functional information such as airing dates the most highly valued.

Viewers were found to engage in an average of ten TV-related activities on social media platforms on a weekly basis, including: interacting with friends and fans (72%); following/liking a TV show (57%); sharing or recommending (61%); watching full clips and trailers (61%); searching for info and show schedules (66%); and gaming or signing up for freebies (49%).

Web-delivered content via apps and smart TVs will eventually result in the demise of the set-top box, though rights issues present the main challenge to this shift, according to BT Retail’s director of TV Alex Green. 

Speaking at the Connected TV World Summit in London on a panel discussion about ‘the virtual pay TV set-top box’ Green said that technology was not the main concern when it comes to a shift  towards app-based cloud access, but that removing the networked PVR could present some major challenges.

Despite a growing ownership base of Smart TVs, there is still a lack of conscious desire to use the sets to connect to the Internet, with most consumers preferring to connect their televisions to the Internet with other devices like games consoles, according to new research from UK pollsters YouGov.

An estimated 13% of the UK population is now thought to own a Smart TV, although less than half of these owners currently use their device as the primary means of accessing online content. Furthermore, fewer than half (47%) of Smart TV owners currently use the set to go online on a weekly basis.

DRM consortium Intertrust Technologies has launched ExpressPlay, a cloud-based content protection system that it says will enable service providers to protect content including video, audio, ebooks and games.

ExpressPlay works with existing Marlin-enabled connected TVs and set-top boxes, including the UK’s YouView platform and HbbTV-based products, as well as with iOS and Android apps, according to Intertrust.

Intertrust is also providing an embedded software development kit on request for device manufacturers, and a content packager to enable service providers to ingest content.
