Motorola Mobility’s Fourth Annual Media Engagement Barometer reveals that consumers are watching an enormous amount of video, in some surprising ways, in unexpected places.

Motorola Mobility’s Media Engagement Barometer is an independent global study of video consumption habits among 9,500 consumers in 17 countries. The study looks closely at new and emerging content trends, such as multi-screen habits and recording behaviours, which are dramatically shifting the way audiences are consuming video.

Les innovations poussées par les géants de l’électronique et les opérateurs de téléphonie mobile vont permettre une diffusion rapide et massive de la télévision connectée, déjà présente dans 14% des foyers français. Ce mouvement contribue à renouveler l’usage du  grand écran en proposant de nouveaux services : VOD, partage de contenus entre les écrans de la maison, jeux, transactions, interactions sociales via les réseaux sociaux ou encore contenu additionnel interactif relié au programme principal. Mais il y a fort à parier que nombre de ces nouveaux usages seront  bien plus naturels via un second écran, notamment parce que l’écoute de la télévision est principalement sociale (en famille dans le salon) alors que certains de ces services appellent plutôt à une relation intime et individuelle (twitter en réaction à un programme ou accéder à un contenu exclusif par exemple).

Web-delivered content via apps and smart TVs will eventually result in the demise of the set-top box, though rights issues present the main challenge to this shift, according to BT Retail’s director of TV Alex Green. 

Speaking at the Connected TV World Summit in London on a panel discussion about ‘the virtual pay TV set-top box’ Green said that technology was not the main concern when it comes to a shift  towards app-based cloud access, but that removing the networked PVR could present some major challenges.

TV viewers are not often using apps on second screens that are designed to enhance engagement with TV, according to a study by NPD Group.

The research firm said that while multitasking is common, US viewers aren’t use their second-screen devices to interact directly with apps designed for the TV programmes they are watching.  Only 47 per cent of second-screen users participated in TV relevant activities, according to the study. Those that did interacted most by visiting IMDb, Wikipedia, and social networks.
