YouTube has tripled its mobile advertising revenue in the last six months, and a key factor may have been the removal of the YouTube app from Apple’s iOS software.

The news comes from a Bloomberg interview with YouTube’s vice president of sales Lucas Watson who commented: “It’s a huge part of our business, and we know that’s where it’s headed.”

Netflix said that its relaunch of Arrested Development helped boost membership numbers in its second quarter, with more gains expected in the current quarter with its forthcoming Netherlands launch. 

Announcing its second quarter earnings, Netflix confirmed that the Netherlands launch would come “within the quarter” and set its sights on further international rollouts – though did not comment on what markets would come next.

TiVo has settled its pending patent litigation with Motorola (now owned by Google and Arris), Cisco and Time Warner Cable and that TiVo has agreed to enter into certain patent licenses with Arris, Cisco, and Google. As part of the settlement, Google and Cisco will pay TiVo an upfront lump-sum payment of $490 million, bringing the total from awards and settlements related to the use of certain TiVo intellectual property to roughly $1.6 billion.

Romain Moyne will be in charge of httv’s sales operations in the area.

DanceTrippin switched from satellite distribution to cloud-based delivery by Your.TV.

Tim Metz, Managing Director of DanceTrippin, said the switch would provide “greater flexibility in localisation and image quality, which can now be adjusted and targeted on a per country (or even per platform) basis.”

Until now, DanceTrippin was distributed on the Astra 3 position at 23.5 degrees East.

The 24/7 dance music TV channel and UPC Netherlands have announced they will continue their cooperation. DanceTrippin will start to provide VOD titles of DJ sets for UPC’s customers on a weekly basis.

Google has reportedly approached media companies about licensing content for an internet TV service, in a bid to offer a cable TV-style service over the web.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, Google has made “made overtures to some programmers in recent months” about the initiative, and is looking to license linear channels – most likely in the standard programming bundles taken by cable and satellite operators.

A Rovi study has provided updated metrics on connected TV owner demographics and usage for the first quarter 2013. When compared with previous results, the findings suggest the market for connected TVs is maturing rapidly.

The audience for connected TVs is shifting, with females now – for the first time since Rovi and Decipher began polling the market in 2011 – representing the largest portion of owners at 55 per cent. Owners of connected TVs now represent a far more balanced range of age groups with a decrease in 25-34 year olds and an increase in older viewers.

Statements made in Nairobi by officials from Chinese pay-TV operator StarTimes Group suggest the broadcaster has the whole of sub-Saharan Africa in its sights as far as pay-TV and the receiver technology side of the business is concerned. The number of pay-TV subscribers in Western Europe increased by 1 million in 2012 to 94.1 million, and will climb by another million in 2013, according to a new report from Digital TV Research.

This comes despite pay-TV subscriptions falling in Italy (down by 482,000) and Spain (down by 350,000) in 2012. Italy and Spain will experience further falls in 2013, but both countries will start to recover in 2015.

However, the Digital TV Western Europe report estimates that pay-TV subscriptions in Germany increased by 689,000 in 2012 (prompted partly by analog DTH switch-off) and by 347,000 in France.

Technicolor has released details of a Color Certification process that is designed to guarantee the colour quality on any computer or mobile display device.

In partnership with Portrait Displays the first 4K Image Certification has been awarded to Marseille Networks for its system on chip to deliver high quality content on 4K televisions.

Technicolor says the two certification programs, Color Certified and Image Certifed, provide solutions to critical issues – inconsistent color accuracy on computer and mobile devices and the lack of content for viewing on 4K televisions.

The French regulator CSA will decide on a dispute between France Télévisions and PlayTV, a site that offers 70 TV channels for free over the internet, by the end of July.

According to Le Figaro, this follows a hearing held at the CSA this Monday (June 24).

France Télévisions has accused the company Play Media, which launched PlayTV in 2010, of broadcasting the channels France 2, France 3, France 4, France 5 and France O without an agreement and also siphoning off commercial revenues from the group.
