Ultraviolet is gearing up for more European deployments, with the body behind the service also hitting back at claims that it is complicated and not customer-friendly. 

Speaking to DTVE, Mark Teitell, the general manager of the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE) – the consortium behind UltraViolet – said that even though Ultraviolet launched in the UK in late 2011 it was “still early days” and that the next stage of growth would follow when a big retailer adopts the technology.

The audience for video viewing on mobile devices grew year-on-year by 162% to 48.1 million people in December across five main European markets, according to Comscore.

The research firm’s 2013 Europe Digital Future in Focus report also said that online video viewer growth on PC in the EU5 – Germany, UK, Italy, France and Spain – also grew by 5% to 158.9 million viewers.

The total number of pay TV subscribers in western Europe has fallen for the first time ever. New research from DTVE publisher Informa Telecoms & Media reveals that there were 92.6 million pay TV subscribers across the region at end-2012, a year-on-year decline of 380,000.

The number of pay-TV subscribers in Western Europe increased by 1 million in 2012 to 94.1 million, and will climb by another million in 2013, according to a new report from Digital TV Research.

This comes despite pay-TV subscriptions falling in Italy (down by 482,000) and Spain (down by 350,000) in 2012. Italy and Spain will experience further falls in 2013, but both countries will start to recover in 2015.

However, the Digital TV Western Europe report estimates that pay-TV subscriptions in Germany increased by 689,000 in 2012 (prompted partly by analog DTH switch-off) and by 347,000 in France.

Providing superfast broadband services to the whole of the European Union could be much less expensive than previously estimated. This is the key conclusion of a new report from broadband specialists Point Topic.

Earlier estimates suggested the cost could be as high as €270 billion. Point Topic puts the figure at about €80 billion, with nearly two thirds of that total needed to service the lowest density areas.

In Europe 85 million TV homes receive their signal from satellites, up from 84 million in 2011, according to new stats by satellite operator SES. 

Its annual Satellite Monitor market report, SES claimed that over the last four years, satellite has increased its reach in Europe by 17%. With 43% of all digital homes, satellite also continues to be the leading digital TV infrastructure in Europe

La fin de la diffusion analogique en Irlande, en Italie, en Lituanie, au Portugal, en République slovaque et au Royaume-Uni en 2012, porte à 22 le nombre de pays de l'Union européenne (sur les 27 qui la composent) ayant respecté la date recommandée d'un arrêt à fin 2012.

Selon l'Annuaire publié par l'Observatoire européen de l'audiovisuel, l'année 2012 marque un tournant décisif pour la télévision numérique terrestre en Europe.
