Boxee has said it will cease support for its cloud-based DVR service Cloudee following its acquisition last week by Samsung.

“Joining Samsung means we will be able to work on products that marry the best hardware and software in the TV space, products that will be used by tens of millions of people and will help to shape the future of TV,” Boxee said in a customer announcement.

Intertrust launches ExpressPlay cloud-based content protection | C2M : veille Digital Media | Scoop.it

DRM consortium Intertrust Technologies has launched ExpressPlay, a cloud-based content protection system that it says will enable service providers to protect content including video, audio, ebooks and games.

ExpressPlay works with existing Marlin-enabled connected TVs and set-top boxes, including the UK’s YouView platform and HbbTV-based products, as well as with iOS and Android apps, according to Intertrust.

Intertrust is also providing an embedded software development kit on request for device manufacturers, and a content packager to enable service providers to ingest content.

Cloud-based TV services, driven by IPTV, cable and satellite pay TV service providers, will grow from $120 million in 2013 to more than $750 million by 2017, according to a new report developed by the Multimedia Research Group.

In the report, "Cloud-Based TV Services for Pay-TV Operators," senior research Jose Alvear concludes that the cloud will prove to be a leveler in the competition to provide multiple pay TV services.

Telekom Innovation Laboratories (T-Labs), the Research & Innovation arm of Deutsche Telekom, is testing a proof-of-concept for set-top box (STB) virtualization to see whether it will be possible to move more STB functions to the cloud. While there are no definite plans for deployment, Deutsche Telekom has a high-level strategy that supports the ‘cloudification’ of key functions and services where it is practical.
