The new Amazon Originals TV pilots from Amazon Studios, were the most watched TV shows across Amazon Instant Video over their first weekend, making up 8 out of 10 of the most streamed episodes across the video service.

The pilots are available exclusively at www.amazonoriginals.com and on the Amazon Instant Video app for Kindle Fire HD, Kindle Fire, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Roku, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and Wii U, as well as hundreds of other connected devices. Already thousands of customer reviews have been submitted with 80 per cent at ratings of 4 and 5 stars.

While that actually adds up to more money on a yearly basis ($95.88), it may bring new users into the fold — and it could help Amazon compete against Hulu+ and Netflix, both of which charge $7.99 a month for their streaming video plans.

Lovefilm is streaming a pilot of a new kids’ show developed by Amazon Studios. It is the first of 12 pilots from the online shopping giant’s creative arm and the first to be streamed in the UK.

The show, ‘Sara Solves It’, is an educational show aimed at children and parents – and represents the first foray into original content which rival Netflix has moved aggressively into, notably with its much publicised ‘House of Cards’ series starring Kevin Spacey.

Amazon could be losing up to $1 billion per year on its streaming video service Amazon Prime, according to Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, who commented during an interview with Dow Jones editors in New York yesterday.


Hastings’ assumption is based on content licensing deals that Amazon earlier this year after a bidding war with Netflix. Amazon is likely splitting those licensing costs between its domestic Prime service and its international streaming service LoveFlim, he said. And based on financial information from Netflix’s last quarterly earnings report, those number could be sound.

Findings from independent survey research firm 451 Research’s ChangeWave service show that while Netflix leads among ‘paid alternative TV providers’, the Amazon Instant Video service is making big gains among consumers.


“While Netflix still holds the largest share by far of the paid alternative TV market, consumers continue to shift towards Amazon’s Instant Video service,” said Andy Golub of 451 Research’s ChangeWave service. “As Amazon’s TV and movie content becomes more competitive with Netflix, its popularity is surging among consumers.”
