When students are able to see the mathematical concepts they are learning visually they develop a deeper understanding of the content.  This technology allows students to use 3D graphers, sketchpad, and other mathematical tools to enrich their learning.  I have varying degrees of ability in all of my classes, and this technology will allow me to better differentiate for my students, as well as prepare them to be successful participants in a 21st century world.

Using technology has helped me become a true partner in the educational process and it has helped me and my students realize our creative ideas. The first year I started with students filming individual dramatic interpretations.I then let students do whatever they wanted in creating a full feature film of two very long stories we read. There were no rules about length, props, format. I wanted them to direct us and steer the ship.

I see technology as a great asset in creating excitement as well as higher-level critical thinking skills. When students leave my class I want them to be prepared to be highly qualified members of our digital world.

My teaching is supplemented with class discussions, video clips, animations,  graphs, figures and clicker questions. Knowing when to use these techniques and type of technology is important. Demonstrations that can help students visualize an idea, law or topic in action helps keep them engaged and allows for more immediate questioning and students making connections with the content.  Using technology enhances many concepts that are abstract and may provide insight by manipulating variables and seeing immediate results including animations of what is happening at the molecular level which students cannot see with their own eyes or imagine with their own thoughts. Technology helps me created a flipped classroom, assess student learning immediately create a place where students can find success in science.

Students are developing multiple ways to think about, explore, and understand the multiplication of negative numbers. In this activity, students create short videos (using iPads and the ReverseCamera Lite app) to understand multiplication of integers as movement on the number line. The video below explains Lance's Vision of the role of technology in the classroom.

The project above was completed by sixth grade students in the spring of 2013.  They made videos of themselves reading and then discussing a favorite poem, an idea inspired by the videos compiled as a part of the Favorite Poem Project, a joint project coordinated by Boston University, the Poetry Society of America, the Library of Congress and other organizations.  The password for access is Huskies.

I am very excited about bringing new tools and knowledge of technology into the classroom. I believe that the students are living in a technological world and that these skills are necessary for 21st Century learners.  Students are more engaged when I use technology tools appropriately in class.  I am excited for the professional development that accompanies this Cohort as well to be able to use the tools effectively with students for learning.

One of the first activities I did in my classroom was to ask students to use the iPads to research apps that would be relevant and useful and motivating for students to use in a middle school classroom.  Students researched on the iPads, then completed a google doc that they shared me with me describing what they discovered. Many students found games they like, but some of the apps that I have continued to regularly use are Quick Graph, Educreations, Geogebra, and Story Board.

Teachers are mentors and guides: we do not exist to feed students information and to mold them into certain images- our duty is to open doors and provide paths. Through our encouragement, insight, and the tools we provide, we have the ability to help students find their own truths and make their own discoveries. When we create a classroom that is project-based and largely experiential, our students thrive intellectually and emotionally.

Throughout the process of participating in the 21st Century Cohort, I've had the time and the opportunity to re-think how I use technology in the classroom.  i'm a big believer in authentic outcomes for students.  I want my students to do the "real" work that "real" writers, "real" readers, "real" mathematicians, "real" scientists, "real" entrepreneurs, "real" historians, and "real" thinkers actually do.  I still do live performances where students present authentically to an audience, but technology has also allowed me (and my students) to re-imagine other authentic avenues for exhibition.

I hope to learn and apply relevant technical tools to aid in student conceptual understanding, teacher efficiency, and student meta-cogniton. After vetting tools, I seek to share them with other teachers in my school and help with training to help other educators in using the tools to effectively and efficiently spread knowledge and increase students' critical thinking.

I see a classroom where students are creating, collaborating, connecting, and commemorating  (and apparently using a lot of alliteration ).   Through technology, students move at their own pace and access resources they need when they are ready to learn and use them.  In this classroom, the teacher is a facilitator, challenging and guiding students as they journey towards their goals.

I believe all students deserve engaging, authentic, and relevant opportunities to help them grow as 21st century readers, writers, listeners, speakers, and thinkers. Maintaining high standards for students, I set standards of the same rigor for myself as a teacher by engaging in constant, ongoing reflection to improve my practice.

I believe that all students are capable of greatness when they are treated with respect, given creative license, and pushed outside of their comfort zone (with the right support and encouragement). My goal is to develop the minds and hearts of my students so that they are capable of thinking critically and acting purposefully in our complex world.

Since 1995, I’ve taught English at New Vista High School. Throughout these years, I have used technology in ways that differed from my own high school experience.  These days I integrate technology—Google Apps, Photoshop, and video production—into literature classes and have recently started teaching and designing online classes.

I have used my learning to put technology into the students hands on a daily basis. Students are using Google Docs to work collaboratively within the scope of various units. They are using videos to document progress and design ideas on various projects, and they are using Web 2.0 applications such as Edmodo on a near day to day basis.

I am anticipating many outcomes for my students and myself as a result of my participation in the 21st century cohort.  First, I am hoping to learn about the tools available to my students that will help them learn in the way that is best for them.  I am also hoping to learn to use many of the tools myself so that I can help all students access them. I am excited to learn from other professionals and share what is working and what is challenging.

I envision a classroom where students spend all of their time engaging with music in a variety of ways. Students can use SmartMusic for playing assignments and assessments while using computers, netbooks, and personal devices to complete music history and theory assignments. I envision them using multiple web 2.0 applications to engage with music learning outside of class, and to make connections between music and other disciplines. I envision parents and community members using my website to collaborate with me for the success and growth of my students. In short, I see my experiences as a member of the 21st Century Cohort as a way to take my instruction to the next level.
