Debate on zero hours contracts. You need to recognise the argument for and against....but what does success depend on?

David Readman's curator insight, April 28, 2014 11:29 AM

However you view them, zero hours contracts are going to be judged on how they are applied in practice.

It is hardly surprising that employers are greatly in favour, but the views of employees are influenced by what happens to their working  hours. To give an example, one of my clients operates a number of restaurants and on evenings early in the weeks it is not unusual for them to be quiet so waiting staff are asked if they want to go home.

Another client operates a civil engineering company, but only  calls in those staff on zero hours contracts when he actually has  work for them.

Key Business Plans For Small Business (Video) | BUSS1 - Starting Up | Scoop.it

When it comes to the universe of small businesses very few people actually engage in business planning in a pro-active fashion.

Often it is done as a way to mitigate the problems resulting from the unintended consequences of their own untested assumptions.

Because they did not invest the few hours and few dollars to plan in advance – they must waste their valuable time and money (money that could be better used and numerous ways) to put out the fires caused by their lack of attention to the organization’s future.
