How Humans and AI Are Working Together in 1,500 Companies

How Humans and AI Are Working Together in 1,500 Companies | Strategy, HR, Data and AI | Scoop.it

Many companies have used AI to automate processes, but those that deploy it mainly to displace employees will see only short-term productivity gains. In our research involving 1,500 companies, we found that firms achieve the most significant performance improvements when humans and machines work together. Through such collaborative intelligence, humans and AI actively enhance each other’s complementary strengths: the leadership, teamwork, creativity, and social skills of the former, and the speed, scalability, and quantitative capabilities of the latter. What comes naturally to people (making a joke, for example) can be tricky for machines, and what’s straightforward for machines (analyzing gigabytes of data) remains virtually impossible for humans. Business requires both kinds of capabilities.

So it turns out that a collaborative mind set applies to success with artificial intelligence as well as our fellow humans. Seems like a pretty useful attitude to develop!

Adopt or Die: AI Leaves Manufacturing No Choice

Adopt or Die: AI Leaves Manufacturing No Choice | Strategy, HR, Data and AI | Scoop.it

Artificial intelligence is positioning itself as the transformative technology of the century. The speed at which it is improving manufacturing operations leaves the industry with two options: Embrace the machines or get left behind.

Considering that a manufacturing business operates much like a living organism, with the CEO as the brain, we must accept that limitations exist here as well. And like Hawking, manufacturers must learn to rely on intelligent machines.

For Hawking, this was to answer questions and ask many new ones concerning the infinite expanse of the universe. For manufacturers, partnering with artificial intelligence will allow CEOs to ask the right questions, and using the millions of data points streaming in to provide solutions.

AI is not superior to the human brain, or vice versa. They point is, they’re totally different things.

AI is good at repetitive tasks that have clearly defined boundaries and can be represented by data, and bad at broad tasks that require intuition and decision-making based on incomplete information. In contrast, human intelligence is good for settings where you need common sense and abstract decisions, and bad at tasks that require heavy computations and data processing in real time.

Looking at it from a different perspective, we should think about AI as augmented intelligence. AI and human intelligence complement each other, making up for each other’s shortcomings. Together, they can perform tasks that none of them could have done individually.

John Lasschuit ®™'s curator insight, August 13, 11:09 AM

While AI researchers are racking up ever more impressive successes, in many respects AI seems to be stalled. Significant as the successes are, they’re all around solving specific, well-defined problems. It isn’t surprising that AI or ML can solve such problems. What would be more surprising, and what seems no closer than it was a decade ago, would be steps in the direction of general intelligence or creativity.

Round of AI movements across the American industry.

Richard Platt's curator insight, July 11, 6:39 PM

First was big data, and then came cloud, then the machine learning frenzy. We reached peak machine learning in 2017.

Last year investors pumped in over $15.2B in funding to AI startups across multiple industries. It was a 141% spike in funding from 2016.  Over 1,100 new AI companies have raised their first rounds of funding since 2016. And that’s more than half the historic number of AI startups that have ever raised an equity round. The normalization and mainstreaming of machine learning will make investors picky about the AI companies they fund.
