Passasjerfly uten pilot i cockpit rett rundt hjørnet? ~ Forsvarstema - blogg av Knut H. Nylænde

Passasjerfly uten pilot i cockpit rett rundt hjørnet? ~ Forsvarstema - blogg av Knut H. Nylænde | Business Insights | Scoop.it

| Business Insights | Scoop.it

Design thinking – My Telegraph

When someone mentions the word “design”, the first thing that comes to mind (at least to most people) is probably this: aesthetics. This kind of thinking towards design has brought upon modern society a great gap between “designers” and common people. To say the extreme, it has created the impression that designers are only concerned about the “artistic” aspect of things, thus putting it into the end of the spectrum opposite more “serious” fields like business and governance.
However, a movement of individuals from various professions are taking to the foreground a more inclusive and purposeful approach to design called “design thinking”. At the forefront of this movement is a global design consultancy firm, IDEO. The firm is best known for helping develop products and innovative campaigns for several global brands, such as Apple, Prada and Samsung.
In a 2002 TED Talk by David Kelley, the IDEO founder introduced the principle of design thinking, focusing on the concept of “human-centred design”. First off, Kelley defines design thinking as “an innovative approach that incorporates human behaviour into design”. This approach brings design back to its core purpose, which is to solve problems.
This approach to problem solving brings together several people from different backgrounds (not just artistic designers) to brainstorm. The focus on diversity is part of an attempt to empathize with the consumer in general or customer groups in particular.
Kelly lists three main principles behind the firm’s design-thinking strategy. First is human-centred design, which I’ve already mentioned above. According to this design process one should always start by finding out what people need and to understand the culture and context surrounding the problem that is meant to be solved. The second element is the importance of prototypes. The third element is shifting the destination or goal of design from consumption to participation. Brown puts it this way: “design may have its greatest impact when it's taken out of the hands of designers and put into the hands of everyone”.
In this light, It is only apt, I think, to propose to business leaders and entrepreneurs to consider applying the “design thinking approach to business”. After all, like Brown and Kelley have proposed, business and design seem to have the same purpose and end in mind, and that is to solve problems and make peoples’ lives more efficient.

Knut Nylænde founded Moxie AS, an Oslo-based investments firm, in 1999. Currently heading the company as its CEO, Knut’s focus is on the development of small to mid-sized businesses that are innovative and have a strong research foundation.

Knut H. Nylænde: First the Swedes, then the Poles, now also the British – My Telegraph

These days, you should not be surprised if a waiter in a bar or a restaurant in Norway politely asks you if you can give the order in English with an accent that indicates he or she can only be British. Also, in typical technical positions that require higher education, more and more British get jobs. The numbers of Swedes and Poles are still far higher than that of the British, but it now seems that quite a few British people are also looking for opportunities in Norway.

The Norwegian economy is still in an excellent state with its continued growth and very low unemployment rates. This has now lasted for many years, and the Norwegian hunger for new foreign workers (skilled and unskilled alike) seems to remain unchanged.

Obviously, Swedes (and Danes) have an advantage, as their languages are so similar to the Norwegian language that they can communicate easily on their own languages with Norwegians. Poles are, to a large extent, working as builders and don’t need to speak much with others than their colleagues who very often are Poles as well.

Compared to South-Europeans, the British have a huge advantage with their native English, as the Norwegians’ skills in Spanish, Greek and Italian are very limited. They are therefore much more adaptable to the Norwegian labour market. Obviously, in many positions, fluency in Norwegian is a requirement.

For how long will this situation last? There has been a huge demand for imported manpower to Norway for a long time now and there is good reason to believe that it will continue at least for the coming few years. Obviously, if the global economy is seriously deteriorating, this would hit Norway as well. But the international crises have to grow much worse before this has any serious impact on the Norwegian economy.

Knut Nylænde was educated in Law, Accounting, and Economics in two of the most renowned business schools in Norway. Today, he serves as the CEO of Oslo-based investment group Moxie AS. Knut writes about business, politics, and cultural issues in his blog, KnutNylaende.com.
