Very interesting list of factors which Google has identified in good managers.  It is essential to have the respect of the team, set clear goals, be focussed on the results and then support the team in reaching those goals.  Listening - not telling is the key skill.  It is not surprising to know that Google have a very strong coaching culture.

The world of work and an employee's place within that world, have been changing rapidly in the last few years, and rewards systems that were once commonplace, are rapidly loosing their relevance and effectiveness.

Where once extrinsic rewards (financial) were prime motivators, intrinsic rewards  (psychological rewards that employees get from doing meaningful work and performing it well) are now proving to be more relevant to today's work force.

This excellent and comprehensive article, describes the reasons why intrinsic rewards are so important today, and it identifies the four intrinsic rewards available and how workers view each of them.
