Why manufacturers choose to roll form metals

Roll form which is sometimes referred to as open section forming is the latest and most popular ways or methods used by many companies today in shaping metals.
Abigile Johnson's insight:

Roll form which is sometimes referred to as open section forming is the latest and most popular ways or methods used by many companies today in shaping metals. It employs a series of sets of dies to end a metal sheet gradually until the desired profile or cross section is acquired. Unlike other ways of shaping metals, roll forming is a continuous operation of bending wherein a long strip or sheet of meet—typically of coiled steel—is passed through stands or roll sets. Each of them performs just a small incremental component of the bend until you are able to achieve the finished cross section profile. Gone are the days when manufacturers of metal parts are using the traditional means of shaping metals.

What is Roll Form

What is Roll Form | Business | Scoop.it
Abigile Johnson's insight:

Roll form machine creates steel products by bending it continuously along a long line of rollers. The machine is basically used in huge industrial applications and businesses where producing great numbers of steel products is needed and is an example of the beneficial effects of industrialization as well as mass production in the modern society. The process by which the steel product such as channels is produced by a roll forming machine starts when it is fed continuously into the machine at one end. At first, this is the four distinct components of the machine. In the next part, the metal is passed through a series of rollers where it is basically bent a little bit more compared to the previous set or rollers until the third stage is reached.

What makes roll forming different

Roll form which is sometimes referred to as open section forming is the latest and most popular ways or methods used by many companies today in shaping metals.
Abigile Johnson's insight:

Roll forming is different from the older techniques that were once used by manufacturers. This is because it can be combined with secondary operations of shaping metal such as pre-punching, mid-piercing and post-punching inline along with sweeping before it is cutoff. What makes manufacturers today decide to use roll forming in shaping metals is that it can offer them a lot of advantages. One of them is that the same machinery can be utilized to create a wide range of cross section profiles. Every different profile will require a specially designed roll set.
