Volvo to Study Potential for Building Electric Roads

Volvo to Study Potential for Building Electric Roads | Business as an Agent of World Benefit | Scoop.it
In collaboration with the Swedish Transport Administration, the Volvo Group will study the potential for building electric roads.
David Cooperrider & Christopher Johnston's insight:
How do we move things forward? Through business and society partnerships advancing innovation potential--just like Volvo. “Vehicles capable of being charged directly from the road during operation could become the next pioneering step in the development towards reduced environmental impact, and this is fully in line with our vision of becoming the world leader in sustainable transport solutions. Close cooperation between society and industry is needed for such a development to be possible and we look forward to investigating the possibilities together with the City of Gothenburg,” says Niklas Gustavsson, Executive Vice President, Corporate Sustainability & Public Affairs of the Volvo Group.

GE Has Invested $10 Billion In Clean Energy and Helped Create 10,000 Jobs. | Business as an Agent of World Benefit | Scoop.it
Over $10 billion has been invested so far into renewable energy by GE's energy investing unit, the company recently announced -- making GE Energy Financial Services one of the leading investors in the industry.

When taken altogether, the projects produce roughly two times the electricity consumed annually in Los Angeles -- not an insignificant amount, to
David Cooperrider & Christopher Johnston's insight:

GE's renewable energy projects avoid the annual emission of about 26 million metric tons of greenhouse gases, the equivalent of 5.6 million cars, according to US Environmental Protection Agency methodology. The projects funded by GE Energy Financial Services create an estimated 10,000 direct US jobs, according to National Renewable Energy Laboratory and GE modeling.

Armed forces see rapid scale rise in renewable energy--is the military the place where leadership will come from? | Business as an Agent of World Benefit | Scoop.it
“The use of clean energy technology has seen a sharp rise in military sites in the U.S., as the armed forces push into green sources of power around the country, a report said. (U.S.”
David Cooperrider & Christopher Johnston's insight:
At a recent conference in London CEOs make a clarion call for a new magnitude of change..., one former financial sector CEO concluded, “the solution has to be a war-time scale investment in low carbon economics—a bit like the Apollo Program, but global this time.” Another top-flight investor agreed, noting that we probably have “about 15 years to run with business-as-usual emissions before the onset of unprecedented climate-induced political, economic and financial volatility” starts the rough ride in earnest. Could it be that the military will be our model? Why are military thinkers moving faster on this agenda than, say, politicians like mark Rubio, or utilities in Arizona?

Consumers To Take Control Of Solar Energy Supply: PWC Predicts a Kodak Moment for the utilities Industry | Business as an Agent of World Benefit | Scoop.it
“Originally published on RenewEconomy. Last week we wrote that some utilities in Australia – particularly those in regional areas – accepted that the future would bring big changes to the way energy was produced and delivered, and that communities...”
David Cooperrider & Christopher Johnston's insight:
Big Change has been predicted for distributed, internet enable smart energy solutions that will shift power to the producers, that is people who have essentially turned their home or office into a power plant. But what if that change came quicker than even these utilities expected? And if that extended into big towns and the suburbs of major cities? And what if it resulted in a reduction in electricity prices for nearly all consumers? That is the scenario being painted to network operators and the utilities industry by global consulting firm PwC, which says the sector is about to go an unprecedented and rapid transition as dramatic as that which affected other industries. Electricity utilities, it says, are about to face their “Kodak moment” and the key is the emergence of rooftop solar, and its ability provide a cheap source of electricity, as well as other “enabling” technologies such as storage and smart software. When we think of billboards we do not think of sustainable design inspirations. But suppose we did. And suppose that everything we make was intended to create more regenerative, positive good than harm. Masdar is a leading force advancing the cleantech revolution globally. Aside from coverage of Abu Dhabi Ascent, we will be getting a closer look at some of the work going on at Masdar Institute during this trip. While the UAE is still very clearly in the oil and gas industry, it is always very uplifting to see what Masdar is working on.

Masdar, a subsidiary of Mubadala, Abu Dhabi’s strategic investment company, has invested in or developed nearly 1 gigawatt (GW) worth of grid-connected renewable energy projects across the world. And then there’s also the work it is doing at Masdar City and Masdar Institute. It’s a very bright spot in the world.

Tesla Gigafactory Moving Forward In Two States: Changing the World Requires Great Management | Business as an Agent of World Benefit | Scoop.it
“Originally published on Gas2. Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk is reportedly ready to announce the two finalists for the location of the coveted Gigafactory, and may break ground at both sites. Why?”
David Cooperrider & Christopher Johnston's insight:
To move thing forward Tesla is going to do groundbreaking in 2 states--then they will decide where to start first based on acceleration. Some states are nightmare slow on things. Others are more agile. The location of the Tesla Gigafactory had been whittled down to just four states; Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and Texas, though California has also made a last-minute bid to snag the massive manufacturing facility. But Musk has said California won’t work because regulatory issues would delay the factory, and time is apparently a big issue…to the point where the Tesla CEO is ready to break ground on two locations simultaneously. David Cooperrider & Christopher Johnston's insight:
One of our friends at Case Western Reserve University is using his success as a business leader to advance the idea of conscious business. Can a shift in thought save a failing economy? Scientist and business leader Ratanjit Sondhe thinks it can, and points to his business as proof. Sondhe said embracing the concept of oneness - the belief that everyone and everything in the universe is interconnected on a fundamental level — was the catalyst for a profound change that took his business from near bankruptcy to immense success. Oneness thinking, Sondhe said, when practiced in business is a form of mindful leadership that positions the business and the individuals it touches for success. For entrepreneurs, corporate executives or anyone seeking personal empowerment, Sondhe offers a proven strategy for becoming a successful, inner-directed, mindful leader in an economy sorely in need of exactly that.
