kathy johnston's insight:

Good short intro about ways to detect salinity with remote sensing, based in southern Iraq. Have to identify seperate cropping areas from bareland, as bareland is not necessarily an indicator of salinity, although it could be!

kathy johnston's insight:

Study in pakistan showing success in studying salinity with remote sensing during Dry season, but not in very hot or humid conditions. Village hut mud roofs did get identified as saline or barren patches. Used Indian satellite IRS-1b. Used 3rd band, NDVI for stressed vegetation. 2005, so perhaps a bit old?

kathy johnston's insight:

Has a good literature review on remote sensing in identifying soil salinity. "Past Perspective". Sorts into Why remote sensing is useful, band use, worldwide examples, pakistan examples. Literature for each topic in chronological order. Also explores using new methods of remote sensing for salinity identification using the IRS-1b LISS-II digital satellite data. Water table depth <2m  indicates salinity.
