Mobile analytics firm Flurry is closing out the year with a look into the forthcoming shift in mobile installed bases expected in 2012. Using data from the firm’s dataset of over 140,000 apps running worldwide, it was able to calculate smartphone penetration in established markets like U.S. and Europe. Then, using additional data from the IMF in combination with Flurry’s own data, the firm was able to then determine which countries represented the top market opportunities for mobile app developers.

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc is expected to set up a digital bookstore in Brazil in the fourth quarter, as it seeks to get a piece of the fast-growing online retail market in the country that inspired its name.

The e-commerce powerhouse, named after Brazil's longest river, wants to elbow its way into Latin America's largest economy with the popular Kindle e-reader and a Portuguese-language catalogue of digital books, according to Brazilian publishers and an industry source familiar with Amazon's plans.

#1 Online Ad Spend in Brazil Broke Records in 2011
According to IAB Brasil, online ad spend in September 2011 was 40% higher than online ad spend in September 2010. It reached a record amount of $141 million reales (US$79 million). It grew more than any other medium in that time period—pay TV was a distant second with 22% growth. Overall, in 2011 online ad spend went up by 25% compared to 2011, taking in 3.1 billion reales (US$1.7 billion). Online broke another record in Brazil in 2011 by taking up 10% of overall ad spend, a huge jump from 2010 in which online only made up 4.3% of total ad spend.

Baidu, the search engine known as “China’s Google” has launched a Portuguese-language version on the Brazilian market (http://br.hao123.com/) of Hao123, a directory of links that also allows Internet content searches.

At the beginning of the year the company said it would open an office in Sao Paulo and that Hao123 would be the company’s first project in Brazil and the first of the company’s products to be localised in Portuguese.Baidu recently opened a research centre in Singapore where it translates its services into Portuguese, Arab, Thai, and Vietnamese.Hao123 has a Google search box as the Chinese services, which owns the Internet tool, has yet to be optimised for Portuguese.
