Senate Joint Resolution 12: Sanctioning Racial Discrimination in Hawaii

Senate Joint Resolution 12 would institutionalize racial and ethnic discrimination in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment.
Brandon Tanglao's insight:

This article dicusses how Hawaii violated amendments.  Hawaii's constitutionality was called into question by the supreme court because they violated the fifteenth amendment. "The Supreme Court in Rice v. Cayetano,The Court held that Hawaii’s election system for the trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs that only allowed “Native Hawaiians” to vote violated the fifteenth amendment." Hawaii was discriminating against it's residents! This is a great example of how a state law doesn't always come into agreement with the federal law.

The Right's Misconstrued Constitution | Brandon Tanglao - Fifteenth Amendment | Scoop.it
The Supreme Court will rule on the right of a corporation owned by abortion opponents to assert its freedom of religion on health insurance, trumping a woman's choice of birth control.
Brandon Tanglao's insight:

"The Right's Misconstrued Constitution" is about how the fifteenth amendment can be overruled by Congress. Although the fifteenth amendment ensures the voting rights of racial minorities, congress members (republican) were able to shut down the counting of votes in Florida. An example of this overruling includes; Scalia issued a ruling to halt the vote-counting. The vote-counting was halted because they were worried that if a tally was displayed showing Bush behind, it could damage Bush's "legitimacy". To keep Bush's legitimacy in tact Scalia and four(4) other republican justices threw out Gore's votes, putting Bush in the lead.
